Hi all

I have Win98 on FIC503+ / AMD K6 350Mhz. I have a serial mouse which is not detected (get a warning at boot up in Win 98). I realized that the COM ports were disabled. I have enabled those. Have not flashed the BIOS because I am not sure I am an expert enough to do that, despite all the help available on the web.

The mouse on my system is not detected. Someone said this may be because of bad BIOS - is that possible? Also, can it occur because I am using a PS/2 mouse with a serial adapter? Note: the adapter came with the mouse in the same box (both made by Belkin) and has worked in the past on a different system.

I dont have a PS/2 port, else I would directly use the PS/2 mouse on that.

Please help. I would appreciate ANY help that you can offer. Right now, I am using my keyboard to navigate in Win98.
TIA
PK

This keeps coming up time and again. A PS/2 mouse will not work with a serial adapter unless it is especially designed to do so. The two mice incorporate different circuitries that require a special wiring arrangement that allows the mouse to function with both setups. The adapter only takes care of the plug differences but does nothing for the electronics.

Hi

I realize that. But I think this adapter is specially made for this mouse (they came together and worked on a diff system earlier).
Thanks

You may have to install a com port in device manager now that you have enabled the hardware although Windows plug and play should have recognized it and automatically installed it..
