No more Team AnandTech IRC channel?

After a long time of absence, I tried to log on to irc.teamanandtech.com, and found that the #teamanandtech channel that used to exist is now empty. All that's on that server is a bunch of strange wireless crap that seems to have nothing to do with TA whatsoever. Additionally, it looks like whoever manages the teamanandtech.com domain "hijacked" the irc subdomain over to some irishwan site.

What happened? Did I miss something? Is there some other IRC channel where Team AnandTech people hang out now?

JL, not sure what is going on. tairc2.2y.net was the last IRC server that I used. And I don't know who uses it anymore. It's been so long since I have been on there (lack of users) that I forgot what it was like. And to my knowledge, there isn't a current irc channel that people hang out at.

I am always looking forward to a new IRC channel that people would be willing to use.

well, irc.teamanandtech.com has always been a different computer then teamanadtech.com and it is managed by Brendan Kehoe. He is also the person who registered irishwan.org.

Last time I was in the channel (probably close to 6 months ago, although it may have been up to a year and a half) there wasn't any TA discussion going on, certainly nothing compared to 3 years ago.

I miss the IRC days. The last time I went there, I was rudely greeted by someone who wanted to do bad things to my kids. :|

I'm an Oper on GamesNET and would be happy to create a channel for all the Anandtechers/DC folks to idle/hang out/chat/whatever. Because of the rules of the network, a moderator would need to request the creation of the channel, but GamesNET would be happy to have you guys.

I (almost) always enjoyed chatting with the Team and my IRC stats definitely reflected that For one thing, it did wonders for my touch-typing speed If you do get one fired up, expect to see me loafing around in there. I think we might want to have some ground rules laid down about keeping the channel what I would call "family-safe," in light of Engineer's experience and occasionally my own. Pr0n, warez, etc... there's other chans for that stuff, now isn't there.

edit: and I can probably still dredge up the necessary instructions and scripts to make mIRC speak out loud via an Agent

LOL, I remember that; it was very funny - for about 30 seconds.

For some suggestions in the area of making rules, I'd suggest that whoever's in charge take a look at this page. It's primarily aimed at moderators, but it would be a good resource for every user of a future TA IRC channel to spend a moment perusing.

Knowing as I was a op in the latest channel. But not able to be there all the time. It makes me sick that it just took one guy to make the channel not fun anymore for you all to come there. I wish there was a better way to moderate a channel 24/7.

Warez isn't supported in any way, shape, or form on GamesNET, so I would hope that wouldn't be a problem. Plus, with me there, it wouldn't happen anyway (who would be stupid enough to bring that up with an Oper in the channel?)

Hell, if anyone has a *nix box laying around on a reasonable (read: NOT dialup) connection that cn take connections through port 6667, I'd love to slap up an IRC server. It's been a long time since I've done an install and my fingers are itchy to get into it again. I doubt that the folks that manage TeamAnandtech.com would want it on that same server since IRC can occasionally become the target of DDoS attacks, and most colo/dedicated server hosts prohibit IRC related stuff (I know mine does, otherwise I'd offer that server up.)

The last time the irc question came up, both Darkone, and I mentioned that we are ops on a small stable network that has been in existence in one form or another for 10+ years.

It is a well run, and mature net, and we do not have any significant problems with spammers or rude interruptions.

If RononCS 's offer is not to the team's liking, please feel free to check out wildghosts.net.

We have 4 US servers, 2 Canada based servers and one EU based server, with mature opers from all over the world, so we have 24 hour coverage of people who can react to problems.

I hang out on gamesnet irc already so that would be great for me. I'm big into TWL (www.teamwarfare.com) which is basically a ladder site for online squad based gaming. I'm registered there as [Geno]Jarlaxle but usually use the name TWL|Jarlaxle or Jarl-work (often times both). What would the channel name be?

My vote would be to have LD set up the old channel again, as long as he, ViRGE, Wolfie, and/or the other moderators would be willing to keep an eye on it so we don't have a recurrence of some of the problems that we used to have.

Sorry, I just got back from a 60 mile snowmobile ride in 3 hours. We got 14" of new snow yesterday and today. I had to get out before the trails where junk. I still haven't sold my sled. Kinda disapointing too. Oh well. Back hurts and well, I am just not used to it anymore. hehe

Just my opinion, but it's easier to moderate what's going on when you're on a well policed network that doesn't support crap like what's been talked about that happened in the past. I'll be happy to be the policman, if needs be.

WE really need the IRC channel back. I've spent a few days (just minutes at a time! ) on the BBR IRC channel and I remember how much fun it can be. Something to really bond the TeAm a little more...and throw a few trout too! :Q
