no more "always-on" clone mode with nvidia and vista64?

my old setup was xp pro and i had several nvidia cards (most recently a 9800GTX) and it's always been like this:
i have the rig hooked up to an hdtv on the second dvi port (using hdmi adapter) and as soon as i turn on the tv, it clones my main display.
tv is only 1920 x 1080, so i have to scroll up down but that's not a problem.
my display (24" LCD) remains 1920 x 1200

my new setup is vista64 ultimate with a gtx 260. i have to manually force it to clone each time and when i do, the 24" LCd changes to 1920 x 1080 to match the hdtv.

is this a vista thing? a new nvidia driver thing?

EDID is what tells your computer what your display supports. As for why Nvidia doesn't allow exceeding that in Vista, I'm not sure.
