I was on my computer today and talking on msn when the computer froze. I restarted it but once it started up the monitor wouldnt get any signal, the power led would flash on and off but the screen was black. you can hear the speakers and the login sound for windows loading but you cant see anything. after awhile i shut everything off and when i turned it on it would go all the way through start up screen and the progress bar thing for windows would stop moving and the monitor would like freeze the image of the load screen and stay there on the monitor but then you could hear the computer going to the desktop but it would still show the load screen. Any ideas?

Possibly your video card isn't seated properly. Don't know about PCI Express, but that is a fairly common happening with the AGP cards.

It's worked fine for over a month though, and i tried pushing it down again to make sure it was in all the way.

Here are some other options if what is really happening is no video, no beeps - failure to boot:

Boilerplate-01:
. Common causes of failure to boot (no video, no beeps) assuming PSU isn't totally dead:
1- RAM, CPU and/or AGP video card not seated properly, a bent pin or corrosion.
2- Drive data cable on upside down or only on half the pins or shifted a pin or two (usually Floppy or Zip drives).
3- CMOS needs to be cleared (AC power must usually be disconnected or . attempts to clear CMOS may fail) Unless your mobo does not use a power-off CMOS clear - check your mobo manual for specific info.
4- On some new mobos there is a CPU protection feature (esp. on Asus/Asrock Athlon/Socket A mobos) that will not allow the system to start if there is no fan (or a fan without a working speed sensor wire) connected to the CPU Fan power connector on the mobo (specifically marked "CPU Fan"). If you tried to start your machine without a fan properly connected, you have to attach a proper and working fan and clear the CMOS before it will boot.

Check you have it plugged in to the right monitor socket. If you have integrated video the VGA port will be on the backing plate with the USB and PS2 and so on, but if you have an add-in card it will be lower down and perpendicular, usually with just a DVI port and VGA on the card by themselves.

AGP slots often have a sliding lock. Check for that and make sure it is secure.

The card is a Nvidia GeForce 6600 I think. It has the two slots that require the adapter for the monitor. Anything else that could be wrong? I'm sure it's in the right slot, because once again, it's worked fine for over a month, just all of a sudden the signal decided to crap out and I'm not getting any visual, just audio from the start up.

New development: I decided to try the graphics card in the other PCI-E slot and it works fine. The only thing is, I started it up and the drivers for the card weren't there so i put them back in. I tried the card again in the old slot, thinking the missing drivers were the problem, but no good. put it back in the other slot, works fine. Any idea what is going on?

SO you're saying it's probably just gonna do the same thing to the other slot....well, at least it's only a few months old....

Try it. But it does seem like the other slot is bad....

Ok so, resurrecting an old topic. I changed the slot the GPU was in and everything started working again (read above) but now 2 months or whatever it is later, it's doing the same thing. are you guys sure it's the mobo and not the GPU frying the motherboard? how can I tell?
