No monitor: help!

My Athlon XP 1800+ system (system specs below) refuses to start the VGA monitor. For some time, when I'd first turn the power on (ECS K7S5A), the system would start to boot, go through the POST screen, then the monitor would go black. Everything else would seem to be running normally (HD LED flashes, seems like it was booting normally). For a while, after hitting the reset button, the system would then start normally.

Last week, I didn't get the POST screen at all, just the message from the monitor "No signal input or cable disconnected." Again, aside from the VGA, the rest of the system appears (as far as I can tell) to be booting normally.

Here's what I've already tried, all to no avail:
- Checked all cables and connections;
- Swapped VGA cables;
- Re-seated the ATI Radeon VE graphics card;
- Tried monitor and cable on another computer -- works fine;
- Swapped ATI Radeon VE into another computer -- works fine;
- Swapped an old Trident S3 PCI graphics card into the problem computer -- same "No Signal Input" message;
- Replaced the ECS K7S5A motherboard with a brand new Asus A78x-x motherboard. At first, this seemed promising, as the monitor came on, the system booted normally & allowed me into the BIOS setup. After starting Windows 2000 setup from the CD and rebooting, however, I get the "No Signal Input" message again. Now, nothing I try can get me back to a functioning monitor.
- Pulled out all extra PCI cards, leaving in only the AGP Radeon VE;
- Checked all power connections to the motherboard, disconnected secondary chassis fans.

At this point, I'm tearing my hair out. It seems the only things I haven't tested are:
- the power supply;
- the CPU;
- the memory, or;
- the internal wiring harness.

Could any of these cause the problems I'm experiencing? Or, am I looking at some kind of intermittent fault with the VGA card (then why didn't the S3 work?) Any other ideas? Please help!

System specs:
- AMD Athlon XP 1800+
- ECS K7S5A / Asus A7v8x-x Mobo
- Maxtor 40 GB EIDE boot drive
- Pioneer DVR-A04 DVD R-W
- 512MB DDR 2100 RAM (1 stick)
- Windows 2000 Pro SP2
- Enermax 350W power supply

Yeah I would say use just the cpu plus heatsink/fan, memory and video card. Also are there any beeps or some boards have leds that show boot process/errors etc.

Could it be a heat issue?
Good luck.
