I unistalled the Realtek High Definition Oudio driver in my Toshiba laptop and restarted. it reinstalled and no error sighn in device manager but microphone doesn't work.
It worked.
I added a USB sound card with a microphone but it doesn't work either.
What's the difference between Set as default device and Set as default communicating device, in sound control?

Set the (presumably) onboard sound chip to default device and ensure that "microphone" shows up in the Windows mixer, that it is enabled and that the slider is set to maximum.

+ Set as default device - All programs will have their audio played through this device (unless otherwise configured)

+ Set as default communications device - All calls/video call audio will be played through this device (unless otherwise configured). (note: Typically this device option will be a headset if it is available.)

A communication device is used primarily for placing or receiving telephone calls on the computer. For a computer that has only one rendering device (speaker) and one capture device (microphone), these audio devices also act as the default communication devices.

If you have Window 7, doing the following below worked for someone.

"Right click on the MS speaker icon in the task bar, select recording devices, single left click the Mic Input then select the properties button on the lower right... go to the listen tab and select listen to this device."

Otherwise, you just need to find the correct hooks & handles to get the mic enabled.

How about this: uninstall the Realtek driver, then plug in the microphone and reboot. Hopefully, the OS will also be aware of the connected mic and enable it too when it re-installs the audio driver.

I have Win 10, and on the right-click on the volume icon in the quick launch there is no Recording Device.
I don't want, at first, to use an external mic, i want to use the internal, it worked in the past.
The audio driver is Realtek High Def
In the Windows troubleshooter the microphone doesn't work

There have been complaints about Toshiba Satellite laptops having issues involving unavailability of both webcam and mic recording capabilities with certain versions of Windows 10 and/or with updates. Some users state that there is a bug in certain versions of Win 10.

Presumably you have tried to enable the mic in Windows 10 settings as follows:

Step 1. Use Windows shortcut keys Win + I to open the Settings.

Step 2. Select the Privacy.

Step 3. Click Microphone in the left column.

Step 4. Turn on the microphone on the right section. You could also enable or disable apps to use the mic.

Ive actually experienced similar issues with sound, but in other versions of Windows OSes. It is a driver installation issue in which there is a conflict in which the driver wont install correctly. It typically results because the order in which drivers are installed (particularly with sound) can matter. Modems, network drivers, webcams and installed apps which use sound compete for audio resources and seem to be able to trample on the sound installation. In such cases, it is the order of their installation that matters.

These are some things to try:

- Uninstall the Realtek driver then re-install MANUALLY the one THAT YOU KNOW FOR SURE PREVIOUSLY WORKED.

- In device manager, uninstall both the Realtek driver AS WELL AS the sound hardware component, then do a reboot.

- In an elevated command prompt window. Run the system file checker:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow
(be sure to have your Windows 10 installation disk or USB installation files drive ready)

- Do a full OS repair (this retains both your settings and data files, but hopefully cleans up any hardware & driver issues).

- Upgrade to a newer version of Windows 10 or install an older version of 10 then do an upgrade.

PS: Having to spend a whole week trying to get the sound capability working correctly again would not be unusual. Ive had cases in which I just kept trying different ways to install the sound system till finally one of them worked.

I will do the thorrough checking you suggest, but in the meanwhile, i don't see any "Privacy" after Win+I (Settings)
Yes, i did update Win some time ago, but i don't remeber if the problem started afterwards since i don't use Skype much
I don't have any Realtek drivers to choose from (you said to install the one that worked). I reboot and it installs by itself.
Is there a place to download older Realtek drivers, if that's the problem? and is it the solution even if the cause is the last Win 10 update?
How can i reduce the competition on the mic? i need only the camera and Skype to work with the mic, i don't need the network option or other options for the mic.

First go to the Toshiba website and key in your laptop model number to obtain the driver that Toshiba offers for your model THAT IS APPLICABLE TO WINDOWS 10.

https://support.dynabook.com/drivers

Verify that the driver being installed by WIN10 upon reboot is the Toshiba recommended version. If not, try manually installing the downloaded Toshiba offered/recommended one for your model applicable to WIN10.

As to availability of alternate Realtek sound drivers, here are some leads. These sites. as near as I can tell, appear to be trust worthy/legitimate.

Toshiba Realtek Audio Driver 6.2.9600.4299 for Windows 10 64-bit

Sounds like you have mic capability now, but that you need to select the right settings for your situation.

Im assuming that you are dealing with an external single "combo" audio jack on the side of your laptop.

Please note that the combo audio jack does not normally support a conventional microphone. Typically the standard combo audio jack involves use of 3.5mm 4-pole plug.

(Now we're gonna see more why audio is so complicated.)

Ordinarily, the OS that came as OEM with your Toshiba will come with customized application sound software for managing the audio configuration capabilities unique to your model.

For example, there should be an audio control panel that allows selecting internal mic (if any) or external mic input from the side jack.

Then if external side (4-pole combo) jack is selected, there will be options to select how the external jack is to be configured:
- As headset (that uses combined speaker and mic - hence 4-pole jack)
- As speaker output only or
- For mic standard input only

If you have upgraded to WIN10 from another OS version, then forget about the customized Toshiba sound panel application. You are now in the hands of Microsoft Windows10 and with whatever that can provide for your unique situation.

Some options for you are to :

- Investigate the sound control settings available in your current WIN10 installation to see if you are able to configure your external combo jack as mic for input only (using standard dual pole plug).

- Use an adapter plug (Note: sometimes people complain that these dont work for them either):
http://www.headset-ratings.com/pc-headset-to-phone-adapter-dual-3-5mm-to-3-5mm/

- Try a microphone that uses the correct jack for use with an external combo audio jack, as otherwise, if you get any audio input, it could be only one channel.

- By an external mic system:
https://www.bestproducts.com/tech/gadgets/g1422/external-sound-cards-for-pc-or-mac/

- Try getting rid of the Realtek driver and let Windows manage your sound and deal with it as best as it can:

I don't want, for now, to use a headset with a combo. later, after i solve the internal mic problem.
Skype and the Voice Recorder app don't see any mic, although it's selected and says it's working in Control Panel-->Sound.
There i chose, for test, an external USB sound card with a mic and same result-nothing
How to revert to the Microsoft driver?
