I'm sure some of you all know that the expansion pack for Supreme Commander was released today. Now c'mon, who bought it?

I just bought it this morning and finally finished installing it.
(I dont know if I have a DVD drive problem or the installer just plain sucks. It took almost an hour. I watched two episodes of Seinfeld Season 9 while it happened. Other DVD games install much faster.)

First Impression: It sucks.
Absolutely NO SOUND. Not in videos or the menu or game play. None. And there are no patches for the expansion yet. The original has sound working, as does every other game I own, and Media Player. Only this games expansion is having issues.

Shame because it looks like it may be lots of fun, but with no audio at all I cant get into it.

For reference: I have the latest available drivers for everything in my system. The fact all my other games work great should also be an indicator the problem isnt mine, its THQ's.

Checked their forums. A handful of folks have similar problems. No one at the company has advice or even acknowledges the problem.

Not sure what to tell you, I had no issues with sound. I'm using the onboard audio from my 975X chipset motherboard. I've only played 1 skirmish, but I like the changes they made, and the performace seems better.

I bought the first one.

I'm not going to buy this one and get burned again.

I bought and enjoyed the first one.. Just picked up the expansion earlier today at frys.. If it's equal, or better than the first one - then IMHO, it's worth it.

EU and Australian gamers have to wait another fortnight thanks to the idiots at THQ. According to the forums, you can't buy it on D2D either with a non-US card. There's also no sign of it on Steam even though they announced SupCom was coming soon back in July.

In summary, THQ suck.

I would get this but there are just too many other games right now, this one might have to wait until after the holidays.

Haven't played it or seen it in stores yet, but judging from a preview on what was being added/changed it should make it to be an even better game similar to how the first series evolved.

Supreme always crashed on me 40mins in game. I don't want to purchase the expansion unless I know this issue has been addressed. It said in the error log it was a memory issue, but I've got 4GB ram, and after memtest86 for 8 hours with no errors.. its a software bug and I'd like to know weather or not its fixed.

Could you be a little more vague? The last couple of missions in the SP campaign took me 1-2+ hours each and my 2gig machine never crashed.

My machine also never crashed, even after 3 hours. Did you try dropping to 2GB?

Did you use the 3GB fix which you can find on the supcom forums(by the way this was implemented by default in Forged Alliance).

Standalone or Requires Original Game?

Now that I have some hardware to play with, I am tempted to at least give it a shot.

"is the game stand-alone?"
yeah, looks like it.

@coldkilla:
about the 2gb memory limit, looks like it has been delt with in FA
here, squidbot, a GPG employee posted some info:
http://forums.gaspowered.com/viewtopic.php?t=21802
but still if you manage to hit the limit, enable PAE in the boot.ini so your 32bit OS can utilize more then 2gb of memory (if you have more memory sticks)

supc 3gb memory enabler for 32bit OS

Gamespot gave it a 8.5 but the written review has nothing but good things to say about it ... if all the reviews are that positive ...

Sup Com and Forged Alliance for under £20 ($40) on Amazon.co.uk released 23rd November.

Never played Sup Com but I think at that price for both the game and expansion, I cant really complain.

Its a memory addressing issue, go on the forums, there is a fix.

Also, the expansion has a new memory management system for vista that doesnt have the crash issue described above.

If you enjoyed the original, youll enjoy FA.

Its more of the same.

They improved the interface a bit, it took me a couple of rounds to get used to, but i like it.

The new units for the old factions are pretty good, they seem to fill in a lot of the weaknesses of each side without making them carbon copies of each other. The new experimentals are very very powerful.

They have rebalanced some of the units and buildings to smooth out gameplay. One of the big things i noticed was the T3 mass fabs now cost twice as much energy upkeep. All experimentals have been made cheaper and faster to build as well.

The AI has new modes, and is a *LOT* smarter than it used to be on the "Adaptive" setting. I used to casually smash 7 AIs in the old supcom, i now struggle with 3 AIs set to adaptive.

Just the quick things ive noticed, ive only played 3 rounds so far :)

I have a dell vostro 1700 laptop with:

vista ultimate x64
2.0ghz C2D T7300
2GB ram
160GB 5400rpm drive
8600m GT DDR2 256mb

Will it look and run ok with my specs?

Is there any problems between sup com/new expansion and vista x64?

Id like to know since i think im gonna jump on the amazon deal.

just fyi, you dont need both to play, the expansion runs without the original.

It runs fine on my x64 vista on the rig in sig.

With a T7300, 8600GT, and 2GB youll likely have to run medium settings and no AA.

A C2D Allendale at 2.7ghz, with 2GB and a 6800GT runs the game fine at medium and no AA.
