how can someone with no medical insurance get medication for depression? like where can they go to get tested and prescribed something like prozac? and how can they afford to pay for the prozac. is it possible without medical insurance? if anyone knows how or has been in a similar situation please let me know.

this is for a friend, in new york, if that helps.

go to your county mental health center.

Zyban (bupropion) is the same medication as Wellbutrim but antidepressant dose is titrated to effect; which requires a psychiatrist. Furthermore, more info is needed to determine the best therapy.

Go to your pharmacy and get it, its just aht you will have to pay for it, so it can be costly....

You also have to get it perscribed so you have to Go to the doctors first, wich will cost you lots of money. After you get that he may also recomend you to go see prefessional help, $$$$$$

see what im saying here? Without medical insurance one has pay it with their own pocket....

BTW: Dont lie to them and say you want to quit smoking so that they will perscribe Zyban. They will give it in different doses and Zyban is not ment for you to use it as an antidepressent. It is just stupid to lie to your doctor like that. You know it is.

hey check and see if any of the local clinics offer free or lowcost care to people without insurance.. i havent had insurance for 5 years and it sux ballz.. i need new eyeglasses and need to get my back checked.. its not fun being poor.. but anyways, sometimes, when i feel up to it, i go to the local clinic that does free sh!t now and then.. sorry not much help, goodluck

oh also one thing that may be interesting; look on the web for those 3rd rate online prescription sites, the ones that sell viagra and fen fen and whatnot.. my mom bought lots of stuff off one and all she did was fill out some dumb online form and they sent the stuff out the next day without even knowing anything about her

buy insurance... ehealthinsurance.com

there's one for about $75/month with a $500 deductible, i think. just pick the plan that allows for office visitis. dont pick the $30/month plans. they only cover major emergencies (like hospitals).

of couse, for depressions, u can probably get admitted.

thanks for the replies. the problem is i don't live in new york so i can't find if there are any free places myself. but that is basically what i was looking for. i'll try to look around online.

CoolTechie: good idea, i'll check those. hope it is not expensive though.

XFILE: that might be a good idea too, except i don't think my friend can afford $75 a month for insurance.

NY? I recall hearing that phychiatrists are available free of charge because of 9/11 in NYC, kinda on a pro-bono basis.

get health insurance (yeah, thats right pay for it)
by the way, medication costs are NOT typically covered (some HMO plans have meds covered)

or
get a job with health insurance benefits (again, meds may not be covered

if you can't pay (versus won't pay), apply for medicaid with your state (public assistance)

some drug companies have discount/freebie programs for medications that allow you to get medications, but you must have a doctor help you do this, and you have to really be broke (versus trying to get something for nothing cus you just don't want to pay)

Medical insurance is not a requirement for doctor visits nor prescription medicine. When I have been w/o insurance I have found the doctors usually do not charge as much as they normally do when billing an insurance plan. The prescription itself might be costly though, but paying for prescription insurance first will probably not offset it enough to make it a viable option.

Has your friend tried any OTC treatments, such as Sam-E or St. John's Wort? The SJW takes some time to "kick in" but it is effective.
