Lots of little ones though. Keeps the immune system strong. :p

Does anyone remember the brouhaha over the Melissa and I Love You viruses in the late '90s?

Yeah, someone there probably excelled too much at his work and secured himself out of a job. :)

Didn't you hear about the cursor .avi exploit that is circulating right now? No patch yet from Microsoft but they are working on it.

All you have to do is visit an infected website, don't even need to download anything.

Now that Macs are gaining more popularity, why haven't we seen any major viruses for them?

Maybe the masses have finally learned to not open every exe/vbs/scr etc. attachment they get. That, and almost every webmail has great spam/virus filters these days.

I have AVAST installed but I leave real-time-scanning disabled. Once in a month, I run a system scan and nothing ever shows up. I haven't had a virus since XP SP2 came out.

Doesn't seem to be the problem that I had.

there was a fairly major worm going around about a month ago. Or is that longer than what you mean 'in a while'?

The only virus's I get is when I randomly search things in Google, and Anti-Vir picks them out really fast.

Obviously not because your computer still works, I had a client get infected with that little bastard. it was an easy fix though, delete the file and the problem is gone...

Hackers are getting smarter, and figured out that their is money to be made in infecting just a small batch of computers and using them as a bot net for spamming and DoS attacks.

Worms like Nimda and Slammer might spread fast, but they get squashed just as quickly. There's no profit to be made in that, unless you're Apple or an AntiVirus software distributor :)

Don't think for a second that it's because systems are more secure or that people have learned not to open stuff. The reality is that hacking and building spyware etc has become serious business run by organized crime. Instead of someone writing a silly virus to annoy people with infections or delete stuff, hackers are writing sophisticated loggers and tools to remotely control systems in bot armies.

Further, PC's have become so powerful that people simply will not notice when their PC has been infected unless the malware is designed to let the user know the pc is infected.

I forget what site I was on the other day, but it basically said antivirus makers admit that they are on the losing end of the battle, that it's pretty much hopeless......

Just one in my gazillion years. Anti-exe virus about 12 years ago. Given to me by a repair shop. Wasn't that nice of them?
