Lost with Samsung Note 4 announcement today, Sony had their own show in Berlin and unveiled bunch of new devices including the new Xperia Z3. Does anybody care? Is it too boring and another phone in sea of phones? Sony unveiled Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 compact, Xperia Z3 compact tablet, SmartWatch 3, and SmartBand Talk.

I'm curious if any of these items interest the people here. For disclosure, I own shares in Sony.

I care about the Z3, but the version for T-mobile (with band 12 support) is slightly gimped (only supports LTE bands 2, 4, 12) - page 8

Z3 compact doesn't have band 12 at all :(

Incrementing the same flagship every six months - which is about the time it takes for the previous one to get to the US - sort of kills interest over here.

If it were available here, I'd consider the Z3 Compact. Form factor is close to the Moto X, so it's one-handed friendly. It also has 2GB of RAM, but the main benefit of "upgrading" would be the SD card slot.

Got the Z1 compact briefly and it was OK, but couldnt do what my Note 2 does.

Since I got a nice new tablet, I've been seriously considering a smaller phone.

Now I am thinking about going back to a small phone. Provided it can do the basics like email and calendar.

I hope these waterproof phones have wireless charging, opening that stupid little door to plug in the usb is a pita.
The z3 compact would be perfect for me if it had this.

thus far all the Xperias have had little charging pads on the side of the body. Big patches of copper for charging in their dock.
Its not the same as wireless, but its reliable and keeps you from opening those tiny doors.

The problem is they keep moving them around the body, so not all docks work with each phone.

The highlight is really the Z3 Compact, not the full-size device. The bigger phone is just a slight tweak of an (admittedly good) formula; the Compact is, for now, one of the most powerful mid-size phones on the planet. I'd rather get one than the Galaxy Alpha, although the jury's still out on the 4.7-inch iPhone.

I like the Z3 Compact if only so the small phone lovers have something to buy and be busy with instead of lamenting the nice size of the big flagships in every thread. ;)

I might consider the Z3 if the price is right. I really need a Band 12 phone, and I couldn't care less if it supports only t-mobile LTE. so long as it does WiFi calling.

For me I rely on a good development community for roms. Sony devices have less overall support because they are less popular. Maybe the Z3 will change this if it actually sees a US release on a major carrier because it is a good device otherwise and it may see good adoption rates.

* There doesn't seem to be much interest in Sony phones/tablets in the US.
* They announce their phone after the highly anticipated Samsung Note 4.
* And it's only a minor update to the Z2.

Yeah, I'm not feeling a lot of love for the Z3. It's nice, but not nearly nice enough.

The Sony z3 compact looks like a nice phone, the z3 is just a high end android flagship.

I find it funny that Sony does not bother for anything above 720p on a 4.6 inch screen for it is not worth the tradeoffs. Yet the put a 20 megapixel sensor in a body that can not take advantage of it for the other parts of the camera is a limiting factor. Yet their 2 thousand dollar TVs and 25 thousand dollar tvs can only display 8 megapixels, oops you prefer the term 4k or 2160 p

Note this go to all phone OEMS with the ridiculous mega pixel race not just sony

I put my RX100 2 on 10 megapixel mode because there is no perceptible quality difference with 20MP and this makes file transfers go much faster. Its sensor is 4 times the size of the best smartphone sensor and it has a much better lens. 20MP on a smartphone is ludicrous. I don't think most smartphones get more than 6MP of effective image detail.

Sony's phones have such little presence in the US, thats why there's no interest. :/

Sony's 6 month release schedule is kinda dumb. The new model is announced right as the previous model starts getting annoucements at US carriers. They need to stop that, move to an annual refresh and global launch.

At least, the small changes add up from the Z1 to the Z2 to the Z3.

What is the implication of this? No Wideband LTE support or just limitations to international roaming?

Most people don't care because SONY does not know how to do logistics. Their phones don't show up here or, if they do, they're very limited.

It's also that their marketing and choice of distinguishing feature (water proofing/resistance is low on most priority lists, and Xperia isn't unique anymore in that area) is a bit bewildering. They should be throwing their weight into implementing better cameras than their competition - and actually showcase them more through ads. It's not like they don't possess the sensor expertise.

I know they are hemorrhaging money on everything except for insurance, but they could fight back in the mobile space by doing other things than showcasing the ability to submerge their phones in water. But, yes, the availability in the U.S. is a problem.

Agree. They need to fire their marketing agency. They make these weird ads that make little sense. It's like they make the ads for ad-people or weirdos.
