Got my first DMCA notice today, from Comcast for downloading Sex and the City over bittorrent. They must be going over records pretty tightly since it wasn't even on for more than 6hours since all I was after was the last episode, which I had missed and HBO onDemand didn't have it for some reason (strange, I wonder what was up with that). Oh well.

Regardless of how people feel about piracy, I don't think anyone wants their isp spying on all of their packets.

Don't have to spy on your packets. Bittorent is notoriously monitored by the RIAA and the MPAA. I got a notice in the fall of last year. Anyone can connect to your torrent and from that, extract your ip addy. They they simply contact your ISP with a cease and desist letter and the ISP contacts the user.

Bittorent isn't safe if your concerned about piracy.

Figures. I don't use it too much anyways, I prefer WinMX since they have a larger selection of older shows and stuff.

Bittorrent is not safe at all. Anyone can see your ip address. I wouldn't download movies or tv shows from it being the MPAA and kin monitor it closely.

Don't know about DC. You don't know who's on the other end. You might want to try peer guardian and then enter a community that you KNOW is safe. Anywhere on the open peer network is NOT.

I'd check some message boards or IRC and try to find a community that way. IRC seems to have escaped scrutiny as have newsgroups as near as I can tell.

I use bittorrent only for downloading shows from the major broadcasters, no HBO, Showtime, etc. Ameican Idol, Nick and Jessica Variety hour, that kind of stuff...not illegal to dl that stuff...
Use secure networks for the other "stuff."

Not sure how downloading broadcast TV is any less illegal, but it would make sense that the pay channels are more aggressive about protecting their content.

I've also seen a lot of people say torrents are being heavily monitored right now, I would stay far away from MPAA material at the very least.

Same thing happened to me with a certain app I downloaded. The creator of Bit Torrent says he made it so it was transparent so companies could protect their copyrights and such.

That sucks, I thought TVShows for the most part were fair game with TiVo and all. I mean, I could record SouthPark every week, but it's easier when I just have to wait 15 minutes to download it the day after.

first, because with bitorrent or p2p, you aren't just downloading something, you are distributing it to others, without permission of the owner.

And if they don't protect their copyright they can lose it, I think, meaning that people could sell it for profit.

Just the gist of it, you can probably find a similar one posted somewhere:

For more information blah blah blah.

They fought that battle years ago when VCR's came out, and lost. Now downloading is fresh meat for them to attack and attempt to stifle in its infancy. F&ckers.

Create a file somehow, made of useless information, that is the exact same size as the alleged file. Then give it the same name. If they come to take your computer, let them! It's not illegal to have a file named "Full House Season 2 - Episode 14" on your computer!
