When I mount my cdrom, using Red Hat 7.2 and KDE, I get an error message telling me the cd is not a valid block device. How can I get my cdrom working?

How do you mount it? Do you use automount or mount from command line? What switches do you use?

Try right clicking on the drive icon and look for properties.
Check in properties that the proper sym link is established for the device.
It should be /dev/hdx, whatever the drive letter is in your system, to /mnt/cdrom.

I right clicked on the cd icon and selected properties, the General tab shows "cdrom". The device tab shows the choices in the pull down menu, /dev/hda2(swap), /dev/cdrom(/mnt/cdrom), /dev/fd0(floppy)

Make sure the /dev/cdrom symlink is symlinked to the proper /dev/hd?.

I dont know what gui tools you are trying to use, but try the command line, I find it easier and it doesnt seem to have these problems :)

I tried the following in Konsole- mount /mnt/cdrom and got the the message mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device. I have a KDE book and have read much of the online help files, but I haven't found much help with this problem.

Where is your CDROM connected? (i.e. primary master, secondary master, etc)
what does 'ls -l /dev/cdrom' say?

I had the same problem w/ Red Hat 7.2. I eventually got too frustrated w/ it and installed Mandrake 8.2.
It found the cd-rom. I'm guessing since it was an older cd-rom it was having problems w/ it. :p
