I also have the same issue with POE from time to time. It's like I just hit the pause button for 2-3 seconds and thats it, runs fine after that. I'm not sure what causes it and it's the only game that happens to. It's just like when your internet connection acts up except without the connection message on the screen. But other then that its very smooth and it only happens once. I've changed so much on my machine I don't know what causes it.... I just signed up to let you know your not alone. In fact a couple others listed this problem in the POE forums.

My guess is either data is loading from/to somewhere not as efficiently as it should be, or some setting (bios or graphic card) isn't set right. Other then that it runs great im using all highest details @ 1280x1024 4xAA/8xAF (Yes my machine can handle this). I'm even looking towards SP2, i've had a couple of issues so far with it and wouldn't suprise me if its at fault. I've played POE for awhile and it just started happening. But like I said i've changed too much to narrow it down to one thing, and its the only game that does this and it's really not that bad.

V-sync is only "good" when u have a fast machine..and your framerates are actually highger than your screen can handle (above 75).,..

When this happens u get something called "tearing"...horizontal lines (parts of the graphic) are not in sync with the rest of your graphics...

Turning on V-sync will actually limit the fps to the maximum of your screen...That would be nice if there was no downside > Vsync needs a good amount of calculating..and because of that., your fps will drop...below your 75 fps ...

So V-sync > no more "tearing"
but lower fps

If im wrong...do tell me

Yeah what is funny is that for me, only one game seems to really have issues. World of Warcraft. I never see the Commit Charge exceed the 1gig of ram that I have, but it always pauses and spins the harddrive for me. Just weirdness... Lowering the PCI latency helped a good amount for me, but also lowered my benchmark scores and my fps in game by around 3-5. But the thing is, it only does it with that game for me, and only after the patch they put in on 12/20. I'm not alone in the complaints on the forums. It did it on my old videocard, then I installed this videocard on around 12/22 and it continued to do it. Too bad I didn't have a point of refrence to see if this card was acting up before that.

BFG technologies also advises the removal of any "old" optical drives from your system... old CD-ROM drives etc. *shrug* lol If you find out something conclusive please let me know too, as I'd rather not be "underclocking" the card by lowering the latency value. BTW what is the function of the "spread spectrum" that I saw listed before?

Is this game an online game?

It may not be hardware related...it could be the server you are playing on, as i know with UT2k4, i've played on lots of servers that have hiccups occasionally.

Yes, it is a very popular online mod for Battlefield Vietnam.

1 gig of ram would seem to be sufficient for all current games. I run with 512Mb with no problems.

I quite agree with looking at unnecessary background processes. Not all of these processes are started in your startup page. Process Explorer (procexp.exe) is a free utility that can help identify processes by listing what apps are using them. But, again, with 1 Gb ram, this is not likely.

Are you running your AV while playing. Some AV and anti-trojan resident programs can interfere with scene-loading. For example, I found that the NOD32 AV resident program interfered with Doom3 scene-loading - the problem was cured by adding the Doom3 folder to the NOD32 exception list, forcing NOD32 to ignore Doom3 memory transactions.

Hope this helps!

It's probably not hardware related. I was having the same problem playing Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne at the folks house on dialup. The "waiting for players" screen never would appear but the game kept stuttering like crazy. I thought for sure it was hardware related but then I brought the machine to my house on broadband and it worked perfectly fine. Conclusion: problem was crap internet connection, not the pc.

Just curious about another thing. When you all have your computers idle, how much of your ram seems to be used? With me, for some damn reason when the swap file is on my C🙁where my OS is) It tells me about 400 megs of ram are used at all times. When the swap file is on D: it says that anywhere from 180-250 is used at all times. Just seems curious to me. Anyone know good ram diagnostic tools to see if maybe my ram is screwing up?

Just out of curiosity, is your Video card overclocked?

If it is, down clock it to the default speeds and see if this still happens.

If I dont have two drives, would repartioning my drive, and installing windows/POE on the c partition, the swap file on the d partition solve the problem?

UPDATE:
As I am playing POE, it does not seem to do it right away. It seems to happen after I have played the game for a while, and then after the first time, it is not long before it happens again. Strange...

From the above statement, it's most likely a heat related issue.

Try running your game with the side off. Check for two things...

1) Does it take longer to start doing this?
2) Does the frequency between freezes change?

had a similar issue on my pc and it ended up being the sound card. have you changed sound cards or updated drivers for one recently on this same install of windows?

Loop2kil
I dont use a sound card, just the built in sound.

When I go out and check the monitoring program, all of the temps seem to be within the specs. Can these mon., progs be trusted?

The monitoring programs are really just to give you a baseline temperature.

I would try it with the side off. If that solves the problem, you've then narrowed it down to heat buildup inside your case. If it doesn't help, then you can pretty much rule out heat.

You have to go about troubleshooting methodically.

It would seem that the freezes have been due to heat build up. I did place the Swap File on a D partition on my HD and XP/POE on the C partition. Additionally, I have been playing with the side and top cover off and an out side fan blowing addtional cool air into the sys.
Since taking these two steps, I have not noticed any freexes, but I am keeping my fingers crossed .
If it continues to function properly, I will think about increasing my video card core/mem clock freqs. I am afraid to increase the CPU freqs becasue my current sys is the result of my old P4 2.4c sys blowing up due to ocing 🙁
I would like to thank everyone for your help.
