NO Jazz Fest

I am thinking of going to jazzfest in new orleans this year. Anyone else going?

The are a lot of great line-ups for both the april 28-30 and the may 5-7 weekends so I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on how to do it all best? Both weekends, choose one, local places to hole up or things like that?

That's a tough decision and you are right - the line up is awesome this year. I believe a lot of the musicians are coming to show their support for New Orleans.

If this is your first time you may want to consider going both weekends. Make your plans now. Hotel rooms will sell out quickly and there are fewer available rooms this year. The jazz fest crowds tend to congrgate at places such as the Maple Leaf bar, Howling Wolf, and Tipitina's after the festival closes each day. There are great evening concerts not mentioned in the Jazz Fest line up. I recommend that you check out NOLA.com for info on night clubs and performances from the start until the last day of the fest. I think you can find hotel listings there also.

Now a few words of caution. If you don't like being in huge crowds or walking through the mud if it rains, the Jazz Fest is not the place for you. It is held outdoors in the middle of the Fairgrounds racing track. This is the hot, humid south so be prepared to sweat; the temperatures are usually in the high 80s to 90s. If you don't mind these things, you'll have a great time. Bring a spray bottle to cool yourself off and look into getting a cooldana.

An alternative is to get a regular bandana and some of those small freezer packs that you can refreeze each night. Be sure to bring sunscreen & a hat.

Awesome advice. Thanx... I looked into NOLA and there is a ton of good stuff. I was also looking at other local places and came across Tipitina's... A lot of local bands pass through there?

boss asked me if i wanted to go. not sure i can afford it tho....

if i were you, id go both weekends if you are able. great times in a great city.

Anyone that is someone passes through Tips. It's a living legend and home to some of the best shows around, especially during Jazzfest. Nothing like a show that lasts till the sun comes.

I'd highly recommend one of the late shows. April 28 @ 2am: North Miss. Allstars; April 29th @ 2am: Galatic; May 6th @ 2am: Greyboy Alllstars. All of these will be smoking shows with plenty of surprise guests jamming all night.

I went to Jazzfest in NO about 4 years ago. It's not my regularly prefered music (I tend to stick to metal), however, live bands, drinking, lots of attractive women, and awesome food makes for a really good time. You should go if you can afford it. It will be a grand adventure!

I plan on going in April. Just hope their isn't any hurricanes. Will mess up my schedule.

LOL, I don't think you'll have to worry about a hurricane in April. But I could be wrong! The season starts in June - Yeah we're looking forward to hurricane season in southeast Louisiana. hmmmm - might be time to move a little further north.

Thats precisley the reason I am thinking about going. And I really like each of those bands you listed, particularly Grey Boy All Stars.

Any local food places I need to make sure are on the list?
