no internet on xp home laptop after switch to WPA from WEP

I recently switched my netgear router from WEP to WPA. My new windows 7 laptop, iphone, wii, CAT5 connected desktop and wireless HTPC have all connected to the network fine. However my wife's old dell with xp home can't seem to find the internet.

It appears to connect to the network fine, but when I try to go to the internet it won't connect. I went into my router and it shows up as being connected to the network. I've tried every combination of rebooting the router, rebooting the PC, forgetting and reconfiguring the network connection and can't seem to get it to work. I even turned off most of the other devices on the network and trying just in case it was an issue with my ISP and the number of devices connected to my internet.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix my issue?

This is almost always a key mismatch. There are two ways to enter it - a passphrase or a humongous hexidecimal string. They must exactly match what is configured on the router otherwise you will show connected/associated but not be able to communicate/get an IP.

Very common.

Like spidey said, key. Reset the key so you are SURE its right and then copy pasta into notepad for safekeeping and then use that to copy to the key field

definitely not a key mismatch. Connects to network just not the internet. Tried ipconfig /renew and get a "media disconnected" error. Trying to sift through googled threads about this error and seems to be a tough problem to fix

wife recently got a nasty trojan that malwarebytes fixed around the same time I switched the network so I'm thinking that may have caused the issue instead of the switch

XP Home need to updated to SP2 + WPA patch, or SP3 to support WPA.

Also make sure that Wireless Card on the computer Supports WPA.

Dumb suggestion, but make sure you're gateway is correct. If the machine has been compromised as you say then all bets are off. You may have a fubarred IP stack. Malware can do that. Can screw with name resolution as well.

If you're getting an IP and can ping your gateway then a key mismatch is absolutely out of the problem. Move up the OSI model. IP stack problems can be a head scratching bitch and many times they are caused by malware.

"Media disconnected" means that the laptop is NOT connecting to the router. I third (or fourth?) the vote for a key mismatch. I would also check the wireless adapter settings in Device Manager to make sure the wireless radio is enabled on the Advanced tab.

I know many issue are a key mismatch, but I've typed the key in a dozen different times. It is the same key I typed into my HTPC, iphone, wii, and the laptop i'm typing this right now. Every other wifi enabled device I own will connect except this piece of junk old dell laptop.

If the computer isn't getting an IP address, then it's not connected to the network. If it's saying media disconnected, I'd suggest removing the wireless adapter and then rebooting. A key mismatch would just keep trying to obtain an IP address.
