no ide drives recognized after installing new hd, pls help~

I wanted to put in a seagate 200gb hdd in addition to the maxtor i already have. I put it in as the slave on the same ide cable. When I turn the computer on, the initial bios screen is not showing any ide drives, not even my dvd burner on the secondary ide cable. all drives shows "None"... I checked the jumpers and it seemed to be correct. I also tried in the bios setup to detect the drive, but it failed to find anything... i'm clueless now... please help!! thank you!!!!

I just went through this with my new IDE on its own cable. I set it to master, but it wasn't detected; even my SATA wasn't detected when I plugged it in. So, after a couple reboots, changed the jumper to it's default CABLE SELECT position, and it all comes together nicely. So you probably Do have it properly set, but something's up with the board or something. Try the cable select position.

Hi, I suspect IMP has it right. Another tip off is that the connectors on the cable are color coded. If you put two drives on that cable you MUST set CS (Cable Select). Luck, Jim

Edit: Using CS is determined by the type of Cable being used!!!!!! Jim

Generaly Dells will want you to use CS, but if you built your own you should have no problem doing a Master/Slave setup on the same cable. You might start by checking your Maxtor to make sure it is set as Master.

If this doesnt work check your BIOS and reset it to default settings. Maybe you changed something in there a while back and forgot about it.
