I never realized how horrifying it is to hit an animal until it happens to yourself. Had a collision with a dog last night in North Portland and it basically ruined my day. I dropped off a friend and was headed back home when it happened. Basically I was driving on the right lane at about the limit which was 35mph and a few yards before the intersection, a dog came running in front of me from behind a tree on the planting strip. I hit the brake before he even got on the road and locked up my tires, but it was too late and we collided :(. There was just no way to stop on a dime. The dog was making all sort of noise and he was alive when the police officer announced I can leave. I have no idea if he's gonna make it and this has been bugging me all day :( :(

One more issue...

The dog had a collar, nobody was with him, no leash attached. The police tried calling the owner but they couldn't be reached. It questions me whether he got out, or if the owner lets their dog wander around in their absence. I'm not talking about very small roads. This intersection connected two four lane roads(two lanes per direction).

you called the police after hitting a dog?
or somebody called them on you?

hmm, i wonder what the laws for hitting various animals really are

it must vary i would think

this link says/implies you have to call the police if you hit an "animal", but what about a squirrel ? or bird? which animals ? a chipmunk? a toad? a weasel ? a snail ?

i grew up in the country, nobody stopped if you hit an animal, unless they were going to take it home and eat it

i ran over a rabbit just recently, it was the weirdest thing: i saw the rabbit, and slowed down to avoid it. and just as i was passing it the rabbit got scared and ran right under the wheels. :disgust:

I got out of the car. Trying to figure out what to do for the minute. And two or three cruisers showed up in a matter of 30 seconds. I don't know if someone called or if patrol car saw my flasher, smelled the rubber or saw the dog on the ground. I think it was the random patrol.

Officers did tell me that it was right decision that I stopped though. They said if I didn't stop and someone called in my plate #, I could be in some trouble.

yeah, i edited my post, apparently it is hit and run (misdemeanor) at least in some places if you don't stop after hitting an "animal" , i still want to know what falls into the "animal" category in terms of this type law

You just gotta realize you didn't intentionally hit the dog and that there is nothing you can do to turn back time so get over it. I know it's hard... I hope you feel better.

It wasnt intentional, and the Police were notified which means if the dog was alive, they wouldve taken it to the nearest veterinary hospital for treatment. I've never hit a dog, but you did the right thing by notifying the cops. I know it sucks, but hey, thats why they call them Accidents.

I agree. Most people would have taken off.
