I was thinking along the same lines. Make sure you wash off any bodily fluids or hairs too. Don't want any rot and stuff there.

I saw a little dog wander by himself yesterday as we were rushing out to NYC to make an engagement...

Had we not been in such a huge rush, I would've stopped to check its tags (thought I saw tags)... just to prevent this type of thing from happening... was pouring rain too.

There was another car behind me as we made a right turn... and they didn't follow out into the intersection, so hopefully they were nice enough to stop for it.
