I honestly think the problem is we can read and communicate with so many people these days.

Like in the past, hillbillies in the south didnt talk to people who lived in San Fransisco. All they knew about each other were a couple little things but we were all Americans. Now look at these forums, I am subjected to witnessing the absolute stupidity and retardation that goes on in the minds of these neocon, conservative, intelligent designer nut job fucks. Because of this opening up with the internet we are basically fucked.
Those first steps towards civility will not start with you it appears. Ah, the life of the liberal elite.

People threatening armed insurrection and/or succesion if they don't get ther way at the polls.

Have you been asleep?

Yes. But only for the past 7 hours. :)

It seems to me your description of the current state of politics is a bit exaggerated. But even if it were not, this scenario would not be a first for this country.

You know people were doing this during the Bush admin right? Its really nothing new.

Really? At the leadership level, which is what we've seen over the last 2 years? Or just since Dems took Congress in 2006, or when and by whom, exactly?

I didn't say leadership level. But then again...I don't know of any elected officials that have threatened armed revolution (not saying there isn't, but I can't think of any).

The pledge he sent to 585 sitting representatives, senators and governors in early 2009, asking them to sign on to the project's three tenets, was simple:

I will be civil in my public discourse and behavior.

I will be respectful of others whether or not I agree with them.

I will stand against incivility when I see it.

Yet two years after the launching of the initiative, he had only three signatures: Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Reps. Frank Wolfe (R-Va.) and Sue Myrick (R-N.C.).

...and obviously *nobody* from AnandTech P&N Forums.

What a travesty. I think we should vote every single one of our elected officials out of office and start brand new. We need people in office that care about one thing and one thing only:

FIXING OUR COUNTRY

It doesn't matter if the ideas come from the left, right, middle, up, or down. Our country is in the shitter and we're all fighting with each other while we circle the drain.

goalpost move fail

How so? Hal2Kilo says people threatened violence if they don't get their way. I responded that people did this under Bush as well.

Reading comprehension fail.

If you wanna talk about "leaders" (please define) fine, but thats a different matter.

Our political system emphasizes freedome of speech and political debate. If you dont like it move to a communist or socialist country where the government will tell you what you can think, and tell you that you have no say in running the government. Then if you speak out you will be sent to a rehabilitation camp.

Think of republicans as the Hippies of the 2010 decade!

Exactly. You see it in this thread and by the rhetoric of the left and democrats. It's all about freedom of speech as long as you agree with them. Calls to tone it down, telling those that disagree with them "it would be much better and we'd all get along if you just don't speak or watch what you say."

Americans don't like to be told what is free speech and what isn't and it's backfiring on the left big time. 1st amendment is one of the most sacred for all Americans, and it's obvious the left doesn't believe in it.

We'll return to civility when the left starts believing in the bill of rights and specifically the 1st amendment. Until then there can be no compromise, on defeat of their beliefs.

I dare to say that Obama is divisive because 1/4 of the country (mostly whites) just can't stand having a black man as president...

Even though I'm very much against most of Obama's policies and what he has done as president.

i disagree that its because he is a black man. its because his policy's are full of shit. he came in saying he was one thing yet did another.

sure there are some that dislike him just because he is black but i do not beleive the number is even close to 1/4th.

disagree. It DOES matter where the ideas come from. If they come from the left they will push leftist ideals which IMO will harm this country. ;)

So any idea a liberal or Democrat comes up with is instantly discarded in your mind.

The same thinking from a Democrat who ignores any ideas that come from a Republican is equally pathetic.

It's no longer about doing what's best for our country, is it?

Ah, the all pervasive "First Amendment" fallacy, wherein it is assumed that when one criticizes the speech of another, one is advocating censorship of said speech. Sorry, but the First Amendment is entirely irrelevant to the point of this discussion. We all have the right to free speech. That is a given. That, however, does not mean one is not responsible for what one says. And it does not mean that the incivility in our current political culture is not a bad thing. Just beacuse one has the right to do something does not make it the right thing to do.

Notably, you appear to implicitly acknowledge that the right is the worse culprit in the regard, or you wouldn't feel the need to make this mealy mouthed non-argument in defense of it.

What the right wants to do is "starve the beast" They want to destroy the government by putting it in financial ruin so they can emerge from the ashes and rebuild it how they see fit. Its delusional and very scary that they have this mindset.

Well they can't win power by having the country best interest first because they truly hate it.
