IW really jumped the shark with MW2. It just turned into a game of dice/camping.

I really like Treyarch's brand of of COD though. Loved Black Ops and Black Ops 2. Hated MW3 but not as much as I hated MW2.

I'll get Ghosts for no other reason than it's something to play on the PS4.

It is funny you mention Treyarch being the best brand for COD. I found them to be terrible until Black Ops. COD 5 was awful, 3 was a let down after 2, and United Offense was okay at best.

No doubt. World at War was AWFUL. Like the most terrible thing to ever happen to video games AWFUL.

But here's what I think happens each cycle: Let's be honest - Treyarch is just cranking out a mod, not an overhauled MP experience. Notice how World at War was pure junk, but then Black Ops felt very much like COD4? And then Black Ops 2 felt very much like MW2? That's because Treyarch is getting IW's engine/gameplay updates on a delay and then just repainting the game.

I knew BO2 was going to feel/play like MW2, and that was precisely the case. Granted they did a much better job with map design and scorestreaks than IW did with MW2, but they felt almost identical.

I played a lot of COD4 back in the day on PC and really liked it. I played MW2 on the PS3 and hated it, but mostly because I hadn't used a controller to play a FPS game since Goldeneye 64. Took couple year break, picked up Black Ops for the 360 because two of my friends were playing it and really liked it, then jumped into MW3 and liked it as well. Last November, I picked up Black Ops 2 at midnight at Gamestop for the first time ever, feeling old while doing it because of all the junior high and high school kids there at the same time with their moms, and I HATED the game.

I agree that Treyarch really took the mantle from Infinity Ward with Black Ops. I liked 2 and 4 a lot LOT, and hated 3 and 5 (didn't even really play 5, beyond a short bit of multiplayer with my cousin, but it was bad). I actually played a LOOOOOT od MW2 as well, but after I played Black Ops for a while, I went back to MW2, and I'm actually a bit ashamed that I enjoyed that mess as much as I did. MW3 was just MW2 with more problems (grenades were broken, spawn-killing was worse than ever, and deathstreaks are laughably stupid). Black Ops II is a fine iteration of the Black Ops IP, I guess, so I still enjoyed it (though the ability to load of on Perks is excessive).

With Ghosts, I was turned off after reading Game Informer's article, where they were saying they turned BOIIs Pick-Ten into a Pick-Twelve (I think), made 7 classes of Perks, and didn't count weapon attachments against the Pick-Twelve, meaning the Perks will be dripping off of people, they'll be so saturated in them.

I seriously hope we're not far from a new Unreal or Quake though, I really liked those games (started FPS gaming on my dad's Urban Terror account and Xbox LIVE gaming on Unreal Championship).

Those types of games are dead. Though I'd rather see a good Painkiller come out like the first one. The arena online stuff gets soo old but I still enjoy a quick SP romp in the likes of SS or PK.

We need an arena shooter. Drop me in with a pistol or basic machine gun and let me run around killing people at random and picking up new weapons and more ammo and health packs to continue the destruction.

The only hype with cod anymore is zombies

Ugh zombies...so overdone.

Is it really fair to call them dead? It's been so long since we've had one launched to really know. And if people really want to say that military shooters are dying off, what's the alternative? Maybe we just cyclically go between military and arena, hard to say. Sadly, I CAN say that arena shooters have no hope on consoles, which sucks (Unreal Championship was the only one with any real community, and that was because you didn't have alternatives yet).

Sadly, they are. I played Quake 3 and Quake Live for many years, took about two years off, then decided to load up Q3 one day and was surprised at how rusty I was...but I'll just blame it on not being able to dial-in my mouse settings...

When I moved away from CRT to LCD I wasn't playing Quake 3. I tried it again and had to relearn. So I turned off vsync and magically I got better...like I went from last place to winning matches.

It really is fair to call them dead. People just don't want arcadey, twitch arena shooters anymore. Unreal 3 wasn't even a very good one at that. People these days want a realisticish shooter with RPG style progression so they feel good. The closest thing consoles have to arena shooters is Halo, which has declined steadily in the MP section IMO.

Well Nexiuz came out not that long ago using the Cryengine 3 and it was dead before it even got started. They shut down the servers so you can't even play bots that i'm aware of...I think they may have even taken it off Steam but not sure without looking.
Sadly I pre purchased that game and no one even played the beta other than bots.

I suppose Tribes Acendance is still going isn't it? Last I played there were a couple of full servers but you had to get in those to play anyone as the others were empty that I remember but it's been a while. I hated how some liked to say skiing was a skill...no it wasn't it's easy as pie to ski all over the freaking map and took no time to master.

I think that's precisely why people are calling them dead.

That and plus if you actually go to the servers in these games, there is no one playing, just bots. Which is a shame cause I did really enjoy that ball game in UT3 where you had to shoot the ball to the goal, would be fun with lots of people.

because they make extremely popular games that he doesn't like and because he only wants to play niche japanes rpgs he thinks that is all that should exist.

They were extremely popular 3 years ago, not so great anymore, sure BO2 had great initial sales last year and then it fell right off the Steam's top games list pretty rapidly that even the original Counter-Strike was higher. We'll see how strongly Ghosts is received this year, my guess will be meh.

Yeah, the transition to LCD wasn't as hard for me. I think I made it back in the 2005/6 timeframe. I'll need to double-check vsync...I forgot about that setting. I probably played Q3 and QL regularly from right after Q3 came out until mid-2011, but recently fired up a CTF match and got beat on pretty bad haha...

CS 1.6 and CS source have always been in the top 5 games played on Steam. As well as Football Manager <insert latest year>.

Quake 3 had me by the balls.

Q3DM17 instagib railguns

Accuracy 100% in my hands, no random jitter added to my point of aim to simulate "realism" with some artificial accuracy coefficient, hated that shit since CS. I aimed, pushed the button, and if I did my part, it connected exactly where I pointed down to the pixel at 1600x1200. Screw that leveling that playing field garbage with random accuracy modifiers.

While I do miss Arena type shooters, I enjoy military type as well. I think there's room for both.

Battlefield 2 was a launch day PC game for me. Friends and I LANed with the demo the night of release experimenting with bomb strapped anti tank buggies , explosives assisted jumping over walls, insertion and extraction via heli, etc.

Contrary to what I may portray, I've nothing against military shooters in and of themselves. I just hate that they have become the sole focus of the greedy industry hoping to cash in on inventing "the next call of duty" to the detriment of other titles. I don't even hate the games, I hate what they represent of the industry.

That and by the time the mainstream blew there loads on console shooters , Id been playing them on the PC for 10 years and its just worn out. I hated seeing the shooter craze infect consoles and take away a lot of the diversity consoles used to have over PC games. Say what you will about Nintendo but they at least have a console focus and aren't trying to be a FPS oriented PC.

I was sad when I grew tired of PC games and went back to consoles only to see...PC FPS games.

Because walmart has the buy 2 get 1 free games deal, I'll probably get ghosts for free. It's usually a decent amount of fun.

On topic- I've noticed a LOT of advertising for Ghosts during NFL shows, whether that be pre/post game, or on NFL network.

Yep, there is at least one per quarter it seems. thankfully, RedZone channel doesn't have real commercials, so I miss a lot, but on the late night, Thursday, and Monday night games I see them.
