yo peeps,
maybe your expertise can help me out.
machine setup:
P3 550mhz, 128mb PC100 sdram, BE6-II, quantum fireball 12gig, Asus v3800 tnt2/ultra agp, sb16/ensonique sound.
Win2k installs without a glitch, but as soon as a game(quake, UT, serious sam..) is loaded either it crashes or freezes.
Made sure all the drivers are latest (nvidia, creative...).
Even playing movies or instense video crashes system...very wierd!!
any suggestions would be great!
thanks!

Before you install any of the games make sure you have the latest WIN2K Service pack...as well as the patchs for the games. They do work.

All game patches applied, SP2 for Win2k was applied fresh as with directx 8.1....still no go...
all multimedia just freezes the pc.

What does your Event Viewer show? It is under Admin tools. Plus are you getting error codes, blue screens or something along the lines of those?

<< did u get that driver for the soundcard yet...

swap in another card, or grab a new one... ~50$ for nice one
>>

Yeah, I would try swapping hardware at this point. I know that both Quake and UT will both run on Win 2K, and of course it can play DVD's and movies..... What's your problem, dont you know that MS builds only perfect operating systems that interact with all hardware and software without a hitch?

seriously though, I would start by swapping the Video card, than the Sound card, than ....

out of curiosity what video card are you running with?

<< Just a thought but I noticed you have a TNT2... Maybe try old Nvdia drivers?? >>

Good idea, when I first started running Win 2K I had a TNT2 Pro. and it didnt run very good until I got the older drivers. Nvidia has archived drivers on their site.
