AGP won't be obsolete until somebody who actually HAS upgraded their video card says: "Damn, my computer is all 'bottlenecked' and won't play games any faster. I wish to heck I'd saved that $180 and bought a whole new system instead!"
Until I start seeing a few more posts like that, I'll consider it safe to assume that the obituaries are somewhat exaggerated.
i already posted my regrets over doing just that
i upgraded piecemeal - and it really "worked" for me [but i was *really lucky* with my timing to sell my old HW for what i was paying for the new HW] - but i really WISH i went to PCIe with the "easy button" instead of the hard way
.. of course, the balance was that i learned a LOT on the way; i never "suffered" with any games on AGP ... and it just cost me time
... a lot of extra time :
x850xt>x1950p/512MB while at the same time i went P4 2.80C @ 3.31 G > P4 EE @3.74Ghz > ASrock MB + DDR >DDR2 [with AGP x1950p] and then to C2D e4300@3.25G and finally new CrossFire MB then 2900xt and finally added 2900p for xfire.
phew
i should have gone x850xt [agp] > x1950xt [pcie] and made the switch all at ONCE ..
