No $ for rent, but have $ for cigarettes?

JEDI

Lifer
an acquaintance got laid off a few months ago and is living off unemployment.
he's falling behind on the rent, and is afraid of getting evicted.

he's worried and all that, but he smokes a pack of cigs/day. :Q
he said the more worried he gets, the more he smokes.

i'm thinking Facepalm, but am too polite to say it to him

The cigarettes help calm him from worrying about the rent and other things. No it doesn't make sense, but when things are bad people will do what helps them cope with it the easiest. Its a common reason why people abuse drugs, alcohol, and all manner of other things.

Smoking is for the weak minded. That is why your friend is failing at life now. Abandon him. He is useless to you.

Isn't our new President a smoker?

So it confirms what he said.

Yeah there was a thread on smoking in P&N where basically everyone said 'smokers are morons!' Of course when confronted with the idea that the President smokes it was a different statement... 'So he isn't allowed to make mistakes and learn from them?'. Lol, the blind. 😉

But yeah OP, the last thing someone who smokes is thinking about when trying to scrape together money for the rent is how much that pack of smokes costs. You want to see your friend have a mental breakdown in this time of need? Cut off his/her smokes. Ever seen Falling Down?

I just wonder why the OP is so caught up in what his friend is doing.

Is his friend trying to borrow money from him?

People will die before they give up smoking. That's a fact. I can't tell you how many people I see on a fairly daily basis that can't afford health insurance, buy smoke 2 packs a day or so. Hell, had a couple come in the other day with their infant who's sick (malnourishment/cough/etc.) because they can't afford proper food for it... but they can each smoke 3 packs a day (Now I don't smoke, but that's what? 2 people x 3 packs x 30 days x 5 bucks a pack = 900 f'ing dollars a month?). Needless to say, a referral to child services was made.

-or drinking
-or coffee
-or drugs
-or gambling
-or (insert vice here)

People are weak in general, and they rather enjoy their vices.

Paying an electric bill, a mortgage, cable bill or gas bill does not bring the immediate gratification and pleasure that smoking does and that means more to people than being responsible.

As long as there is a government willing to give people food, housing and help pay their bills and provide medical treatment why should they cut back on vices?....hell they can have their cake and eat it too.

Meh. Most of the time someone runs short on cash it's because they're living beyond their means. Cigarettes definitely have an impact on one's budget, but usually it's other luxuries that are given up to support them. Once you get addicted to cigarettes they become part of your base of essential needs. Regardless of whether they actually are essential or not they will rate right there next to food and water in their list of priorities. It's likely that this person made a few other purchases that he shouldn't have this pay cycle and just doesn't see cigarettes as something that can be cut for budget reasons.

I quit smoking years ago and would absolutely love to have a puff right now. Damn cancer sticks.

5 years for me and I want a smoke every day.
If you think it is so easy to quit, then start smoking for a few months and try it yourself.

I wouldn't seriously recomend it, because although a few months of smoking is not going to seriously hurt your health, I highly doubt you would be able to quit. Then you would have a long term smoking habit, and it would ruin your health over the years that you smoke.

Your acquaintance sounds like my sister in law.

The other day her status on Facebook was "Citibank Auto seems to think if they keep calling me that money will appear out of my ass!!!"

The next day her status is "I'm all set! Got stocked up on cigarettes, pop, and chocolate!"

So my wife commented on her status by saying "Whew! Let Citibank know you can't pay your car payment or you'd have to sacrifice the necessities!!!"

I've never doubted any smoker who told me how hard it was to quit - I believe it, although I've never been a smoker. I watched cigarettes kill my father though, and by the time he quit, it was far too late. Of course, the power of the addiction is all the more reason never to start.

Of course you should never start smoking. But I started when I was 14 before all the 'smoking is terrible!' craze hit. I'm not saying that we didn't know that smoking was bad for you in the early 70's, but I, like most teenagers, was an idiot at 14.

Who is saying it's easy to quit?
