Here we have the same bone heads that bitch about soccer moms in SUVs and trucks they don't "need". Bitching about people buying SUVs only for prestige. Yet, it's all well and good to drive sports cars that will never see a track. To have spoilers on the ass end of FWD cars, and fog lights blazing for no other reason than... "it looks cool", "it makes me look bad ass", "my car looks meaner..." GIVE ME A BREAK! Bunch of vain, hypocrite, poseurs!

I agree with Ornery here. It's retarded to drive with foglights on when they are not needed. The angle of them makes them very hard on the eyes. It's just as bad as athe morons that drive with their brights on during the day or during a heavy snow.

Oh and BTW Ornery - a spoiler on the rear of a FWD car can be very effective. I have one on one of my FWD cars that was stock, is functional, and was designed for racing applications of the car.

What most people think are foglights are really supplemental 'driving lights'. To be a true foglight it needs to be the following:
  • Mounted as low as possible to the ground as possible (fog is less dense there)
  • Amber color - the standard white light just reflects off fog
  • Have a wide dispersion pattern

The typical supplemental driving lights are white and the beam is focused much farther down the road. Those are definitely nice to have, but are nearly as worthless as your brights when in fog.

I sounds like the first 2 replies are thinking of "Parking Lights" those are not bright enough to do anything in fog

Fog lights are not standard on any car IIRC

my GTI came with fog lights standard. and yes, i drive with my fog lights on.
Oh really? Where.. I looked and saw nothing of a fog light standard 🙂

The GTI has been manufactured since the early 80's, it's very possible that he has one of the 'purer' GTI's out there.

Yes, and no.

A spoiler will be effective in providing extra downforce in the rear at high (80mph+) speeds. However, MOST (if not all) FWD cars are heavily limited by front wheel traction. Thus the addition of a spoiler to the rear doesn't really help improve the limits of cornering much (if at all). If you want to improve the cornering of a FWD car, generally the best bang for your buck addition you can do is a stiffer (or in some cases even adding one) rear sway bar. This will cause you to go up on 3 wheels on a hard corner, but it will also focus more weight to the front outside tire, thus giving better cornering response.

Thus...in reality, all a spoiler really does for a FWD car is:
1) Added coefficient of drag (wind resistance)
2) Improved stability during high speed (100mph+) braking.
3) Added asthetics (some people, and in cases myself included, think they look better)

Sorry for the tangental rant...

When someone's coming the other way with their fog lights on, I turn all my headlight banks on high. Their penis promptly shrivels.

no no, that's their car swearving off the road into a ditch.

Perhaps. But 3 banks of headlights is so much fun to play with.

Hey, I never said it was a bad thing 😉

I drive at night on semi deserted roads: hence my need for some 700meter spots longs, the fogs are on their own toggle and I run them only when I need some serious side-illumination or I'm in fog-the CIBIE driving lights I use when I turn on highbeams (which is quite often).

rogo

some times i turn them on, sometiems not, or when it's starting to get dark, i'd turn the parking lights and fogs, rather then full on headlights.. whatever i'm in the mood for i guess. i really like the fog lights that make the front end look complete, rather than some cheap o aftermarkets that look like you took em off another car.. like on the last gen prelude, the fogs were so well integrated to the bumper that it really looked good.

Yeah I was in traffic ticket school last week. Cop giving school said it's illegal to drive w/ auxillary lights on without fog.

Rogue, most people have to mod their switch to be able to do that (fogs on w/out headlights). What kind of car do you have?

more light = good thing? even as a fill light..

except for those washer nozzle lights, and exhaust lights 😛

So those tire valve stem lights and underbody neons are good right??? 😀

My fogs are more driving lights. They're nowhere near obnoxiously bright since they are more downward than my regular headlamps, not to mention they are white... not yellow or purple or whatever.

Foglights came standard on mine, but so did the switch to operate them. I only use foglights when it's foggy or rainy at night. It annoys the h*ll out of me when someone drives toward me with headlights and foglights, on a nice clear night, particularly when the foglights are oftentimes brighter than the headlights!. For all you guys who think it looks cool, will you still think that way when you blind someone enough that they run off the road, crash & burn, and they're laying in the hospital in critical condition.....all because you wanted to look cool?

Just my .02 cents worth, -kd5-

Foglights have the same cutoff as headlights. Driving lights do not. There is no way foglights will blind anyone if they are aligned properly.

Amber? Whatever happened to yellow foglights? I havenever seen amber foglights...

ive never been bothered by foglights... so thusly i drive with mine. it came on my car, i paid for it, why the heck should i leave them off

Fogs are also used as wide dispersion lights to illuminate the sides of the road-they SHOULD NOT be aimed straight ahead.

They provide quite a bit of additional light in the usual driving conditions here (rainy, foggy, snowy), so I use them quite often. On a clear night, though, there's generally no need. I have seen a number of cars that leave them on all the time here (usually Subaru's), though, and they are far from "blinding." Maybe it's just because the weather is so damned crappy, I'm used to seeing those lights all the time. Dunno, but regarldless, it doesn't bother me.

I have the foglights on the maxima for only one reason: Look mean when I'm behind somebody and they are going too slow. I've been in fog a couple of times and can say with certainty that as fog lights they do nothing at all. They offer no additional illumination. And, for regular non-fog nights they are too weak to be of any significance. When my main lights go on, so do my fogs, and I look like a badass. That's the only reason I use them 🙂

EDIT: Yeah I guess whatever the useless white lights at the bottom that come stock on the maxima. They refer to them from the factory as fog, but they are white and functionally ineffective.
Those are definantly not real fog, real fog lights are yellow and they are bright as fvsk.

real fog lights are not yellow, the yellow ones are the off-market cheap ones. i am glad that where i live that you can get pulled over for driving with your fog lights on when there is no fog. people who drive with them on when there is no fog, are just asking for them to be shot out. me being one that has done this. stupid ricers and there friends
