No flash drives for front USB :/

I can't use flash drives with my front USB ports, though some other devices seem to work fine (it may be because these are all 1.1 devices). I get a "USB Device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned etc." error.

The drives themselves work fine on other people's puters, and on my rear USB ports.
I've tried two different connections on the motherboard with the same result.
USB 1.1 and 2.0 are enabled in BIOS.
All help appreciated.

Sounds to me like the front panel connectors cannot supply enough power for the usb drive. This is not completely uncommon. This would explain why some devices work (likely self powered devices) and some dont (those that need power from the usb connection)
