Well, I decided to make the jump. I've had 512Megs of DDR sitting downstairs waiting for a home, and I've decided to pick up a K7S5A and replace my K7VMA (VIA KM133) with it. I'm happy with my current board, but to be honest, I'd like to see for myself how bad or good K7S5A is. I may or may not keep it regardless of how much trouble I have with it, but I thought I'd try it. Wish me luck! (should arrive Mon or Tuesday, Newegg shipped it yesterday afternoon)

You should have loads of fun with it :D

I got mine a month or 2 ago, and i love it!

Only thing you have to watch out for is losing/no video due to a tight AGP slot, but just push it in firmly and you'll be fine with it :D

Mine's running at 146.7MHz FSB, with an Athlon 1.0GHz Axia 'K' and is doing 1.467GHz happily :) Definately nice upgrade from the Abit KT7 at 110 FSB :)

Got 2 too, and very happy with both.

One of them has run more or less continuously for five months, and I have not seen it crash. Very impressive, esp. given the price.

One thing to look out for is that it comes with a sub-standard battery that should be replaced with something decent ASAP; otherwise it might lose your BIOS settings. Also, I hope you've got a decent power supply!

If you got it from newegg you won't have a problem with the AGP slot. This is because newegg's stock is the "new" version of the K7S5A and it now comes with a AGP slot retention clip. The box and shipping CD are new too.

The problem with the new revision is that I can't use my Alpha8045 heatsink with it. =(

Jerboy's having DSL problems, so he won't be around for a few days yet most likely :D You'll be as happy as a 50$ board can make someone Athlon4all, atleast I and the folks I built them for were.

I have just one of them. It kept running when an Asus and an Abit crapped out on me:Q Granted I stressed them a bit more, but still!

well i sure am happy all you people have gotten decently working boards.. i am happy to report that the guy who now has the K7S5A system i had to setup says it crashes minimally.. well i guess that is good....... that mobo was hours of headaches just to get started.. it wasn't exactly the friendliest beast out there... i wouldn't buy one again off first experience.. but good for everyone who has one and it actually works OK..

Really? I have one of the new ones, and I did install an Alpha 8045 without a problem.

How is the performance of this board compare to a KT133A board, with both using PC133? I was going to buy either this or a MSI Turbo2 at newegg.

See this Anandtech ArticleMore or less, KT133A and SiS 735 are the same when both are using SDRAM.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! I'll post how I do once it arrives.

Well, at the 10th hour of the 9th day of the 4th month, the little FedEx Man stopped and delivered my K7S5A.

Last night I took out my old board, and put in my K7S5A. I had almost no problems what so ever. I just put everything in and went. We'll see how stable it is, but so far, I can't tell a difference in stability. There are 2 things though:

1. What on earth were the designers thinking! Putting the CD Audio Connector right in front of the AGP slot where the video card will be! Pain in the neck, but I'm glad it worked.
2. I remember hearing people complaining about this in the past. My Case is an Antec SX630, and my Power LED is 3 Pins, while the K7S5A has only 2. Not a huge thing, but if there any workaround?

Mine must've been the older model because there is no AGP clip and the packaging is very similar to what my K7VMA. So, I suppose time will tell whether this thing is gonna crack or not. To be honest, I can't imagine it making me wanna replace it. This board should last me much longer than my older one, even though I'll be using SDRAM in it(I've got 512 DDR in there now, but I need to sell them so), it'll let me upgrade to an XP and DDR down the road without getting a new mobo. For Sale Forums here I come!

P.S. When I was "upgrading" my install of Win XP, to update it for the mobo change, I was totally suprised. Microsoft didn't ask to reactivate!! I was totally shocked.

either cut the led pins in half or better: use a sharp needle or something, peel up the tab and easily pull the wire out from the connector. Reinstall it back to the middle of connectors.

I bought one as a stopgap for my 1800+ as I was NOT going to lash out £150 on a Dragon+ and a few months down the line USB2, Firewire, ATA133 and AGP8X arrive on the scene... I didn`t expect much of the 5A but in the last 5 months it`s been as stable as my old BX board / Katmai-500 and THAT`S saying something :) .. 5As are rather like EPoX 8KHAs, if it works then you got a damn good board at a very good price but if it doesn`t the money you saved gets spent on shipping returning the damn things..

The Ideal with either board is to buy it locally and "Sod`s law" will look after you (buy it local and it`ll be fine - ship it halfway across the world and it`ll be a dud)..

Yeah, the 5A is damn good , the IDE/Floppy connectors are in a stupid place, there are only 2 fan headers, the KTS battery should be ditched for a panasonic ASAP and the lack of anything interesting in the CMOS setup is dissapointing (this in no OC board) but it`s stable, well made, based on a chipset that doesn`t need dodgy 4-in-1 drivers and is only aboput 3% slower than a KT266A for a third of the price of a top VIA board..

I can`t wait for the new 755? chipset with all mod cons to arrive, hopefully by then, A-Bit will be using SiS
