No firewall but ports are still closed?

I have a straight cable connecting my modem to my computer yet my ports are still closed ... I have the WinXP firewall turned off .. . any suggestions on what else I can check ? TIA!

Trying to download some anime with BT, need to open ports#6881 - 6999. But ports are still showing closed even with the straight direct connect.

what ports are closed?
you should only have a few open ports anyhow ... unless you are running some type of server software. (ie, usually with win 2k 135, 139, 445, and 1025 will be open ... however less if filesharing is not turned on, and more if you have FTP, web, IRC, or whatever daemons/servers running)

EDIT: Nevermind .... I was confused ...

It's not strange at all for ISPs to block ports on the ISP level. Specifically to prevent stuff like illegal BT transfers. Some do so to prevent home users from running servers -- although if you're smart enough to have a server running, you're smart enough to get around their firewall.

Dr. Gibson, BS.D told him they were.

Put on your XP firewall and specifically open the ports there.

yeah, that's something I haven't tried yet, it just weird how it's not working. Plus I figured if it's not working now, how would it work if I enabled the firewall and specified the ports to be opened.

I ran the Azureus configuration wizard and it errors out saying that I'm behind a NAT, I've tried various ports including 80, 21, and 23.

I used this two links as well -

http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl

What's the model # of cable modem you have?

I've got Comcast, as do many others, and the only reason ports 6881-6889 are blocked for me is because I have a router. 😀

ugh - the cable modem!! I'm not sure what the model# is, I'm at *busy* at work right now, I'll grab when I'm home today ... what's the model # you have? And is there a way go around the cable modem NAT?

Mine's an RCA, dunno the model #, but it doesn't do any sort of NAT stuff. That doesn't seem likely to me, but I don't know what else it could be. What does your IP address report as when you do an ipconfig from the commandline?

Rob

ipconfig gave me some 64.XX.XXX.XXX number ... sorry don't remember from what I go last night. But it was a 192 number for sure.

Do ipconfig /all

Yes, if your Ip is 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx than your modem is doing NATand in turn blocking your ports.

Edit: Cut and paste the results.

damm, I'm at work so I won't be able to do this at home, but I can swear that it had a 64.xxx.xxx.xxx number on it and not a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx

Anyway to check or go around the NAT on the modem? Not having much luck with Google .

Other thing I guess I can try is to use my laptop when I get home and see if my ports are blocked as well.

I just wonder did you ever meet with Mr. Gibson and thus developed disliking?

grc.com is offering a lot of free services to the Internet community. You might be a Genius that knows it all, but few of us do not.

BTW. What are you offering for free to the Internet community?

LordSnailz

I am not familiar with the Antivirus that you are using. Does it have Anti Trojan live shield. If it is on it might block the ports.

hmm, good point, I'll have to check on the anit-trojan thing, but I doubt it. I'm running a really old version of mcafee.

Jack pretty much has it, as usual. 10.xx and 192.xx would indicate a NAT in place. Elsewise it's definitely not hardware, and I seriously doubt Comcast is selectively blocking those ports and not telling anyone.

When you get home, do the following for us:
ipconfig -all
list all processes that are currently running (through taskman)
post a screenshot taken from grc.com

That may help us a bit.
