According to Xbit, no speed bumps this generation. Suspect, but it makes sense.

Think about it - the high end parts out NOW - the 6800UEE/BFG 6800U OC and X800XT PE - are both basically overclocked parts already. What are they gonna do for fall, jack the clocks again? I don't think so. They can't even ship the cards that are already launched.

So here we are, 5.5 FREAKIN' MONTHS after the launch of the GeForce 6s and X800s, and we can barely buy them. Worst paper launch ever?

Every Compusa and BestBuy around me has the 6800's in all flavors, the x800pros are the ones with preorder boxes still on the shelves.

Compusa has them and Newegg doesn't? I find that hard to believe.

Feel free to make the Journey to Reno NV.

The Compusa on S. Virigna had a display case full of GT's and NU's from PNY.

Bestbuy also on S.Virigina has GT's and Nu's those are BFG.

And what ELSE has changed since June? We can expect to see r480 sooner-or-later
(someone has missed a little 'sarcasm' re: the Inq *confirming*)

Here's something from late July Or is that too "old"? :p
Autumn's the time for 512MB graphics
WHETHER WE NEED it or not, ATI and Nvidia will deliver whatever it thinks the market demands and now it thinks that's cards with more memory. It's called marketing, designed to encourage consumers to buy more, more and yet more, and takes advantage of human nature. nature. We just can't help ourselves.

An Nvidia and ATI Autumn refresh will bring you 512MB of memory and we remember that ATI actually said something about delivering 512MB cards by the end of this year.

More graphics memory means larger textures but then again our beloved game developers cannot resist the pressure of the source of their money, the publishers and have to optimise for more standard cards with a smaller amount of frame buffer memory.

It?s sad that even years after people learned that the graphic chip is the heart of the graphic card responsible for performance, people still measure cards by the quantity of memory. The majority of people seem to want a slower card with 256MB than a faster card with 128MB.

So, after years with 256MB cards it's time for 512MB and ultimately to 1024MB in about a year, I expect.

The Nvidia NV48 and the ATI R480 are very likely candidates for 512MB but it all depends on availability at the time of launch.

If Nvidia and ATI are still struggling to ship X800XT Platinum and the Geforce 6800 Ultra imagine how long it will take them to take new NV48 and R480 on market.

Already sold out apoppin. As for availability, I saw the same thing at my local Fry's last weekend; 6800's and GT's were numerous but twas but a lone x800Pro on display.

What about the 6600gt's? I barely found two websites that show them, and only a single plain 6600 is supposedly available now. The others are due 10/8- 10/15 or so?
Anyone found any available 6600gt's on the local store shelf??

Who cares about GTs and NUs....everyone knows those have been wide for a long time. What about Ultras/Ultra Extremes/Ultra OCs and XTs and XT PEs?

Exactly Insom...who in their right mind expects a real fall refresh (or anything before late spring for that matter) when the availability of their April/May 04 products is still so incredibly weak? Don't bother looking for anything new other than the AGP versions of the 6600GT/x700XT's by end of year, that's the only 'new' card that's going to possibly make the shelves.

Did anybody actually bother to READ the X-bits article?
The new chips are also expected to solve the problem with pretty limited availability of the contemporary high-end parts, though, it is unclear whether the developers of graphics chips plan to adopt any new fabrication processes.

New graphics architectures with some new capabilities from ATI and NVIDIA are code-named NV50 and R500 and are expected to emerge later in 2005.

. . . to move availability of code-named NVIDIA NV48 and ATI R480 graphics processing units to Q1 2005

Don't you get it?

1) R520/nv50 are still ON for '05.

2)At the WORST - instead of r480/nv48 being PL'd in Q4 - the date is being moved up (maybe) an ENTIRE Quarter. :p

Your current top videocards - even though in very limited supply - are going to be ECLIPSED next year - TWICE!

R480 NV48 are, as I understand it, simply the same chips manufactured in a slightly different manner to improve yields. How is that a refresh again?

Why do you keep harping on this Apoppin"?

Those of us who buy high end cards know they'll be eclipsed by better cards every year, and yet here you are trying to justify your not spending any money on a card this year by saying "I've got to wait for the R500".

You could say that EVERY year, there are always faster cards out the next. Let's look at the economics of it:

Apoppin': Pays $200 for a 9800XT this year, that he can probably sell for $100 next year when R500 comes out for $500.. Ends up paying $600 out of pocket for year of midrange performance, year of high end.

Rollo: Pays $400 for GT this year, that I can probably sell for $200 next year, buy an R500 for $500.. $700 out of pocket, but I got twice your performance for the first year, and the same second. Which makes more sense? I'd spend $100 more to have high end performance both years?

which 'GT'?

6600 or 6800?

6600 is solidly mid-range and the 6600GT is upper mid-range.

6800 is lower-high end (or upper/upper mid-range) and 6800GT is mid/upper high end.

edit: i can't believe i actually typed that. :p

actually was thinking of the only gt for sale at least here. Of course an ultra extreme (or whatever the name of that card is) would be upper high end. Ultra mid high, gt oc low high so gt = upper mid so really quite plebian. And that is without the extreme high end of sli.

The naming conventions are kinda silly . . . . and when you throw LAST year's upper, mid and lower-mid cards into the mix, it could get confusing . . . . i guess that's why there are lots of posts in video.

So anyway, it looks like the "fall refresh" - r480/nv48 - might turn in to the "Winter refresh" with a simple clockspeed increase and possible optimizations (NO shader 3.0 for ATI until r520) . . .

. .. . followed by a probable paperlaunch of NV50/r520 in the late Spring/Summer '05.

Great . . . 512MB video ram will be likely "mainstream" with 1024 offered on the hjigfhest-end cards . . .

whadaya think . . . . will they top $700 next year?

I thought fiscal 4th Qtr ends 03/05 so R520 will be paper launched this fiscal year ....
