No DSL for you

I tried to get FastAccess DSL at home and couldn?t get the external modem to sync. After testing everything imaginable they (phone company) wanted to schedule a home visit.

The catch was that if the problem was found on my side of the interface I would be billed for the visit plus additional billing to fix it. Is there any way I can find and fix this myself? I know they use specialized test equipment but there must be something I can do short of rewiring my house.

There is a bright side, because now my dial up is always over 50kb and is much more stable than before. They must have done some conditioning while troubleshooting to make my line work better.

Yes, call your local cable operator and ask for cable modem service.

<== Disgruntled former DSL user. Very happy cablem modem user.

first things first.. you put the filters on all the phone lines except for the 1 outlet that is connected to the dsl modem?

have you tried testing the dsl modem on other phone outlets in your home?

Yes we tried that including removing everything so the CO people could reset their system. Still no joy.

Yea it looks like it's cable for me.

Before giving up is there anyway you can connect at the demarc box to see if it syncs there? If it does not then there is no way it is the wiring in your house causing the problem.

Things got so bad with my installation that I had to take the DSL modem and a laptop down to the phone closet of my then apartment building to plug directly into the line so that they could see that it just didn't work. Turns out they had plugged my line into the wrong DSLAM.

Any chance of plugging into their side of the interface?

does your house have an alarm system? Be sure you put a filter between your alarm system + the phone line as that may be causing the problems.

No we didn't try that. To late to try cause I already sent the modem back. Oh well, Live and learn.

They made it sound that there still might be something on my side that could cause the problem. Don?t know what it could be because it?s on a dedicated (no frills) second line that is only wired to two outlets.

No alarm system either.

This is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome with getting DSL service. I was lucky enough to be doing the phone system work for a small company I was the LAN admin of when our current house was built in 1996. The day we moved in I went around and found that only 1 phone jack was working correctly. I then brought home from work a bee-bop tone generator, hand set, and probe and traced the wiring around my house from the demarc to termination. They had cross wired a couple of the outlets and that was what was causing the problems.
