IAA (Intel Application Accelerator, these are Ultra ATA Storage drivers) reports that both my HDs are operating at UDMA-5 speed and both my optical units are running at UDMA-2 However, Nero InfoTool (from the Nero Burning ROM software) is reporting that neither of my slave drives (the WD300AB and the SW-252B) have DMA enabled. Why is this? Is this because they don't "understand" the IAA drivers?

I no longer have the option of selecting "DMA if available" in the Windows Device Manager, but I don't want to uninstall IAA. It's working flawlessly and I'm very happy with it.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
Intel Application Accelerator 2.3
WD Caviars (Master and Slave) on IDE0
Samsung DVD SD-816B (Master on IDE1)
Samsung CD-RW SW-252B (Slave on IDE1)

One way to find out (maybe) would be to do a series of benchies before and after IAA is installed. I installed/removed IAA and it 'seems' to me IAA may be faster in benchies, but slower 'felt speed'. I would suppose this will be set to your preference between the two, I really can't tell which 'is' faster, or better, but there is a differance......
What that is I don't know....

When my burner is in PIO, burning a CD at any speed results in winamp playback skipping (very severely). When it is in DMA, I don't notice any system slowdown during a burn.

IAA automatically enables DMA mode in all drives for you (if possible). I've never checked with Nero's InfoTool tho.

Try burning a CD from your hdd to the CDRW (since they're reported as being not on DMA mode). If buffer level jumps up and down often then you're most likely not on DMA mode.

Buffer level is always at the maximum. I had Outlook, WMP and three IE windows open while burning the CD. I guess DMA has to be enabled : )

From Intel Tech Support:

"Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.

The Nero* InfoTool may display incorrect system configuration and device information if the Intel Application Accelerator is also installed on the system. All devices may be displayed on the primary channel and CD-ROM devices may appear to have DMA turned off.

Please note that information displayed by the Intel(R) Application Accelerator is the correct information.

Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you need further assistance."

So that's it.
