Thanks for the comments all, I do appreciate them. Will check out the SATA settings tonight after work again. I don't have anything critical that I would need to recover really. Mainly a bunch of papers and reports when I was in college and some games installed but that's no biggie. All my finance/work stuff is stored on an external, on my laptop and in the icloud.

Seeing above, just now, made me feel MUCH better! Cause reading previous posts did the opposite. I had NO CLUE re the potential for data loss in this situation!!!!

THANK YOU EVERYONE! Switching the SATA setting from IDE to AHCI seemed to do the trick. No data loss either : ). Now, one last problem. My initial intention before all this happened was to check if my video card had died. Now I'm suspecting it is actually the PCI express slot that is no longer working. I just seated my brand new from box video card into the slot like the quick install guide said and I am not getting any display from that either. Also when I go into Device Manager and check under Display adapters all it says is Standard VGA Adapter with a driver from 2006, which leads me to believe that the PCIX slot is broken. Anyone have more suggestions before I go out and replace the mobo?

And to not cause confusion, all power is there on the new card, fan is running, I can access the computer fine via onboard but when I switch to my card, nothing is being sent to my monitor. Init Display was set to Auto changed it to PEG and still nothing. It's back at auto now.

Thought that SATA setting might do the trick (most motherboards will default SATA back to IDE/legacy when CMOS is reset, while most advanced hard drives are set up using AHCI).

There are two possibilities at this point. Either the motherboard is failing or your power supply (while not totally failed) is no longer putting out enough juice to operate the video card.

What make/model power supply are you running?

I don't recall if i had this issue with a pci-e or agp slot... but some of those are really stiff. As long as your motherboard is stable with the proper amount of stand-offs attached to the pc case... don't be too afraid of putting a good amount of force down when trying to seat the gfx card(with the comp laying on its side so you can push down not sideways).. power down unplug remove it and reseat it firmly, might be all it needs.

could be other things like Steltek already mentioned... tho cheaper to try reseating first. and i would hope the pci-e gfx card would beable to post into bios even with an underpowered PSU, cause its only 2d mode at start. but im not sure

EDIT: just noticed threw google your board has 2 pci-e slots... you can try the other slot if the primary one still isn't working

In addition to jolancer's suggestion about trying the other PCIe slot, what is the model of the new video card you have installed? Have you checked to make sure that you have all of the necessary power cables connected to the new card?

Thank you for the suggestions jolancer and steltek. I switched out the mobo from the gigabyte to an ASrock z77 and the new card works perfectly. My power supply is an Azzatek 700w and all the power connectors were plugged in prior to switching. I tried the other slot (it's only pcix x4) but it didn't work in there either. Turns out my old video card is fine but my friend wants to buy it from me so I think I will keep my new one. My whole set up is working normally now. Upgraded from a radeon 7870 to a radeon r9 290x.

Full specs
CPU: i5 3570k
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16gb 1600mhz
GPU: 4gb radeon r9 290x
HDD : 1 tb WD 7200rpm

Thanks once again, you all have been extremely helpful!
