i get no display but a black screen after the Windows XP Loading Screen where the blue bar runs across the screen...after that..it just goes blank...like it loads but no screen after that...computer still runs....before all this happened...Asus Video Card Doctor for my 9600xt said there was an error with my video card and that i need to replace the fan...but then like 1 sec later..it goes "Your VGA card is OK!"...i just noticed this today....i didn't overclock at all either...just default settings....i shut down my computer so that i could check if the fan was out of place or something......its seated like usual...i turn on the computer and i see the fan is spinning like usual also....i just touched the middle of the fan to see if it was hott...and it was really hott...computer boots up...i get the screen where it asks you if you want to start in safe mode or last configuration or start normally because it says it detected a hardware failure or something...i chose start up normally...goes to windows xp loading screen..then goes to blank screen...no artifacts or anything...only if you count 2 white dots at the left hand screen..then it just hangs at that screen...if i chose Safe Mode...it works...but im unable to do anything like normal windows mode...im out of ideas of what to do..and RMA is last part of my idea...any other solution to my problem?...thanks in advance

get the latest

1) chipset drivers (via4in1, nforce, whatever sys you have)
2) get the latest ati detonators 3.10 and not some ancient sh** off Asus CD
3) check your bios settings, AGP (4x to be safe), 64MB aperture
4) consider bios upgrade

my guess: you run outdated chipset drivers....and/or outdated video drivers

btw. post your config, mothrrboard etc

One other possibility, one that I see at work sometimes: the video card is trying to push the monitor at a refresh rate that the monitor says

~ uhhh... NO.

So try this: boot in Safe Mode, and go through the motions of setting the display to 640 x 480 x 16 colors and 60Hz refresh rate. Duh, it's already at that setting, but go through the motions, and then reboot and see if it will start in normal mode. If so, you're home free... set it to your desired resolution, color depth and refresh rate, and if it blanks, just sit and wait 15 seconds for it to revert to what it was at before.

edit: and flexy's suggestions are good things to do regardless, so do those too :D

i installed latest chipset drivers from mother board cd...3.10 detonators i got...not sure how to update bios...heard it was risky...bios settings are okay...my ViewSonic P90f can support 85Hz at 1024x768...well...thats what it claims...after repeatingly restarting..booting into safe mode..disabling video drivers...disabling sounds...so i just gave up...computer finally worked and posted after the "Windows XP Loading Screen" after i shut it off for like an hour...before i went to bed..i turned it on just to see if it would work..and amazingly it worked...i dont even know how the heck it just happened to start working again...weird...dont even know what is wrong...i had 3.10 detonators...also had latest chipsets installed too...not sure what the problem was...i wanna know a solution to this before it messes up on me again...i mean..i did have all updates installed and latest drivers for basically everything...im stumped...

The cd drivers are almost always outdated by the time you get the drivers. Go to Viatech's site and get the newest Hyperion 4-in-1's. The 3.10's are new enough, though ATi's also released 4.1's.
