I use Windows Media Center extensively on my system, and it requires hardware acceleration.

Earlier in the year I was still in the habit of regularly updating my ATI drivers for my X800XL as they came out. Once I hit 7.3, interlacing was disabled, and 2d acceleration was reduced. Media center was pretty well a slideshow. So I went back to 7.2. The problem continued until it was fixed in 7.6. So I left it there until I tried to run the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars demo. The game wouldn't run without the newer drivers. Strange a game can't run on 3 month old video drivers.

After updating to 7.9, I thought something was strange when the video previews in CCC wouldn't display. Then I fired up Media Center and get "Your video card or video card drivers are not compatible with media center". Media center starts, but it looks like garbage, and runs like it too. I also tried dxdiag, which gives me a crash error on the 3d hardware accelerator tests. I also noticed iTunes can't display cover flow.

So now I guess I go back to 7.6, and give up on QW:ET (which runs well actually, good thing its OpenGL). Hopefully HL2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress:2 runs better on 7.6.

Just a bit of a weak rant. I've had continuous problems with ATI drivers. Though they were MUCH worse with my 7500.. My next card will probably be a nVidia...

Looks like more people are having the same problem with their ATI cards, 7.9, and DirectX.

Did you uninstall your previous set and use Drivercleaner or Guru3d Driversweep before installing new drivers?

I am running Cat 7.8 at the moment :!
no problem with Quake War ET

But older cat screwed my Windows XP installation :( ... I got alot of errors and i couldn't run CCC. So i did a fresh XP install and installed Cat 7.7 which worked fine.

MY recommendation is do a clean install if all fails :! you be surprised that Cat 7.9 may work !

My experiences:

7.4-7.5 drivers had video artifacting and ghosting (basically unwatchable), but they ran at decent performance and image quality with the Bob setting in AVIVO Quality page of CCC.

7.6-7.7 drivers crashed with Media Center in windowed mode or BSOD'd in fullscreen mode regardless of the AVIVO quality setting. I had to use VLC just to watch TV. I tested this behavior extensively with a clean reinstallation of the operating system.

So I reported this via ATI Customer Care, and apparently they heard me because the 7.8 drivers no longer crash or lockup, but the old artifacts are there on any setting but Bob in AVIVO Quality.

Apparently, they reverted to the pre-7.6 deinterlacing/scaling code.

Why can't they get it working on older and newer cards at the same time?
Why can't they get it working 100% on my card?

Yes. I uninstall, reboot, run Driver Cleaner Pro, reboot, run ccleaner to remove old files and registry keys, then reinstall the new drivers, and reboot.
