I don't know, but I was under the impression that MS said they'd be available through the Zune marketplace?

Microsoft is definitely coming in behind the curve in terms of features, but to me it feels like they ultimately decided something along the lines of 'We will release this in late '10, come hell or highwater, get the core OS working, include the following X features, and get it into people's hands'. Everything past that they will put in with updates. Smaller things, like the custom ringtones, can be point updates, but then maybe larger annual or bi-annual updates a la Apple or Google.

Sounds about right.

Yea I saw a link in the Engadget comments pointing to how to find them in the marketplace. You might not be able to use your own MP3s, but they won't deny you the privilege of buying them!

Anyway, seems like an odd thing to lack, but in the end, I'm not really concerned. I don't use custom ringtones anyway, and the average consumer is probably stupid enough to pay for them anyway.

Hopefully a minor update will fix this, as for me one of the first reasons I bought a smartphone as a kid was because I could use mp3 ringtones. Ironically enough it was a windows mobile phone.

If they don't at least give you an option soon then that's a huge mistake. I know not everybody cares about it, but it seems like a pretty basic thing to include. You include it and the people that don't want to use it don't use it.

Go to the music hub. Open Zune player. Open the volume controls. Notice the little bell shaped icon in the upper right that says "RING?"

Rocket science. Maybe years of using a WM6 phone has just made me a smarter smart phone user.

This gives you custom ringtones?
