"No case" computer?

As long as you don't have any little critters, such as a cat or a dog, running around it shouldn't be an issue. I've always built my system outside of a case, with the motherboard lying on the box it came with, and made sure everything was working before putting it into a case.

Should actually be better, since the components are not in a case. When in a case, the ambient temps rise due to heat being contained in a small area. That's the same reason you'll usually get better temps from leaving the side off of a case. The big downside is that you're more likely to get dust on the heatsink since the air isn't being filtered like most cases do.

cooling will be worse. In a case the airflow is directed over the components(if you have a good case anyways). I guess you could point a house fan at it though and then im sure it would be fine.

How would the same idea work in an entertainment center?
In the compartment where the center channel speaker would go.
With the black mesh door...

just for fun:

One time for a project, I made an computer aquarium out of 5/8" mylar, plywood and plexyglass. It was huge and ugly, but really funny when people would ask how it was running hooked up to wood and under water. And why water wasn't leaking out the fan holes. If I can find the pics I'll post it.

I had my old HTPC sitting inside my entertainment center for years without issue.

What is this wire, Yank?

I have thought of making a computer case that is designed to be flat and mount on the VESA mounting holes on the back of a monitor or TV.

The main concept behind having a case is of electronic shielding and obvious protection from and for people and pets and bugs. Wonder what happens when things like a june bug, beatle, snake, mouse, fly or roach decides to crawl on your motherboard or electric contact.

So what happens when you want to move, or you want to move your computer?

they have slim plastic box ITX cases with vesa mounts out already. Forget which site has them but if you google ITX VESA you;d probably find it.

i have this case, fits itx AND matx (as long as you don't use the expansion slots). has built in PSU, if you need it. its cool cuz the back plate is vesa mountable also haha

Old Mac donnald had a farm.. ei ei o~

lol... nice farm you got there.. 😛

(when you have a lot of computers... we call them clusters.. or in a home user cruncher term.. a farm.)

some guy on this forum did it, he mounted it to his wall and it glowed like bluish lights over his computer monitor.

he used like heatpipes to draw heat to a larger fan.

it was pretty cool and actually quite attractive compared to many of the designs I'm looking at above.

anyway, go ahead and do it if you'd like. I've been thinking about it too when I was at my old apartment. but ever since I got a 14" laptop alike with desktop performance measures, my vision of desktops have significantly changed... and I don't regret not ever building a case-less desktop.

Pet dander and dust would be the biggest problem but if you could keep that down to bare minimum an open case wouldn't be any worse off I suppose. You would still need to do routine cleaning. Maybe do it more often depending on the room's environment. The enthusiasts that often use test benches could probably give you some pointers since they often have open running components they are testing.
