Well i was considering moving, but since i am 16, its not an option, i cant get cable or dsl, what should i do, starband good, please help me i am in 56k HE**!!!

Brad,

Not using it myself, but I have looked into Starband. First hurdle, getting the parents to cut loose with the coinage -- a minimum of about $600 for the initial installation, then about $60-70 / month for the service. Second hurdle, if the folks will buy it, do you have an unobstructed view of the Southern sky? (Elevation above horizon requred will depend on your latitude. The farther north you live, the harder it is to get a clear shot at the geosynchronous satellites that provide the service.) Third hurdle, if you play online games or want to use Internet telephony or video conferencing the satellite service is a poor bet because of the time lag caused by the much greater distance the signal has to travel. But the actual sustained data rates are supposed to be pretty good. Fourth hurdle, the danged service is, for now, only available through a USB-connected modem OR through a Compaq Presario sold at Radio Shack that has a transmit and a receive card (both PCI). That means you'll have to also cough up for the extra computer or for WinProxy on the connected computer, then connect any other computers to which you wish to provide access in a LAN. Starband says that ordinary ICS won't work, though I've seen messages posted online by people who claimed to have it working. No routers allowed at this point.

Regardless of how it happens, I hope you get some speed! I'm in the same quandary at the moment -- except for the age. I'm an old man.

Regards,
Jim

There are modems that will allow you to connect to your present provider using 2 phone lines. That will about double your present transmission rate. Some providers will charge an extra fee, some don't.

If you get the right modem, when someone tries to use one of the phone lines for making a regular call, or for incoming calls, the modem will automaticallydrop down in speed and release that one line for normal phone use. Once the call is over, the modem will go back to using both lines.

Am not using it myself, but have read about this.

Certainly not as expensive as Starband. Also, much less hassle, even if you have to install a second phone line. Of course, it ain't going to be as fast as Starband....

In any event, two line modems run around a hundred bucks or so. Buy.com sells diamond's version for $125.

you can just bond two modems together using multilink PPP thru windows. the two modems is only advantageous if you don't have any extra PCI slots.

you've tried DSL Reports and haven't found ANYTHING in your area? I'd pressure the rents to move...or just be patient till you get to college 🙂

You might be able to get Sprint Broadband direct (its a wireless solution).
