For once I'm actually stumped on this problem. A friend of mine has a Compaq desktop with a 1.8 P4. The power supply crapped out and with it being proprietary, he would have to go through Compaq to get a replacement. He decided to go with a new MB and case to avoid being locked into Compaq.
He purchased a MSI MB with the 865PE chipset. He already had the motherboard installed inside the case before I got to helping him. I advise him that it would have been better to install the CPU, heaksink, and ram on the MB before putting it into the case. I finish putting all the cards in and making all the connections. I power it on and nothing. No POST, no error messages, no video signal, nothing. I proceeded to remove each device one at a time but even when i got to the bare minimum of cpu, ram and video card, it still wouldnt boot. swapping these parts wouldnt make any difference either. we then had the cpu tested at pc club and they verified that it still was good. thinking it might be the MB, he returned it and bought a different one based on the SiS chipset.
again he already had the MB in the case w/out the cpu, heatsink, ram installed first before he called me up for help. i installed everything and power it on. again, it was a NO go. exact same thing. we even tried MSI's d-bracket and it shows 4 red LEDs meaning a problem with the cpu. i removed and reinstalled the cpu several times and still nothing. i tried different PSUs and nothing. i flipped through the manual several times to see if i overlooked something but everyting seems to be secure. clearing cmos doesnt help either. his ram is 512MB pc2100 so we tried it with some faster pc3200 but nothing.
this all could just be me as i havent touched intel stuff for several years now. i know almost everything there is to know about amd. am i overlooking something here with the intel setup? according the the manual, there's not much difference in setting it up compared to amd. i'm sure his cpu is the 1st gen of p4 running at 400mhz fsb and the MB claims to support 400mhz. is there a chance the MB he is buying just isn't compatible with his cpu? i'm getting ready to tell him to return the board and make sure to ask the tech people there which MB is really compatible with his cpu. any thoughts or ideas??? thanks.
