No Boot, or POST AMD 1.33 T-bird

I changed the CPU heatsink on my 1.3 T-bird & now my computer won't boot. There are no beeps or sounds of any kind from the speaker. The CD, floppy, CD-burner, & case lights flash. All the fans run. The monitor is black & the power light stays yellow/amber, never goes to green. I've looked at the CPU & MB, no burnt spots, gaps, etc. I cleaned the Artic Silver off the chip. Some had gotten on the componants of the chip. I've reseated & swapped out the video card. Reseated the ram. Tried the monitor with another computer &it works OK.
My fear is that I've damaged the chip or the MB, but I'm not sure how to tell which may be bad.
Thanks,

The specs are:
Antec KS-282 case w/ 300w PS, AMD 1.3 T-bird, Asus A7v133 MB, WD 80 GB HD,Visiontek GeForce 3, Crucial 256mb PC133 RAM, Sony ES Monitor.

Try resetting the ram. Also try resetting the CMOS. Normally there's a CMOS jumper that must be shorted (with the system off) to restart the system in default mode.

good luck

Be sure to clean off the core of the CPU really good and look at the edges and corners and see if you possibly cracked the core. I did this to a Duron 800 while removing a fop38 heatsink on accident. I could however easily see with the naked eye that the one corner was crushed.

Hey, I think we might be in the same boat here too. I posted the exact same problem a few days ago in this forum under the subject "Computer/ Poss. CPU Problems", only mine was with an AMD 1.4 GHz T-bird. I tried all the suggestions that Duvie suggested, but to no avail. I also got some of the Artic Silver compund on some of the components as well. I think I might have just fudged my CPU in the process. You might want to read my post as well, perhaps something that was suggested there might help you out. In my case however, it looks like I'll be shelling out some $$$ for a new processor/heatsink 🙁 Hopefully you won't have to follow the same route. Best of luck with everything.

All the best,
Chris Sterner

P.S. For the record, here's my complete list of system specs:

AMD Athlon (non-XP) 1.4 GHz
Giga-byte GA-7DX motherboard
512 MB (2x256) DDR2100 RAM
IBM Deskstar 60GXP 60.0 GB hard drive (7200 RPM)
ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 32 MB graphics card
Soundblaster Live! 5.1 Platinum
Sony CD-RW 8x4x32
Pioneer 16x DVD
3com NIC
Creative 56k Modem

The Artic Silver is slightly conductive, so putting more than just a tiny drop on the core of the CPU might cause a short in a nearby component.

I swapped out a CPU from a friend & I got the BIOS screen to show up, but it was frozen/locked. I rebooted & it was back to the same black screen. Must be the MB????

I replaced the MB with a refurbished board from NewEgg & a new T-bird 1.4. It powered up & ran great for 5 minutes, then quit. Black screen, no fans, the two lights on the case alternately flash. If I shut it down & let it sit (cool off?) when I power it up the case power light flashes once, the fans make 3-4 revolutions, like they?re trying to start, then nothing. I?ve tried removing the MB screws & repositioning the MB, tried it with the MB not touching the case, removed all the drive connectors, checked for loose or shorted wires, etc. Anyone have any ideas??

Have you tried another power supply unit? What kind of PSU do you have?

BTW, the trick to getting the Arctic Silver off of the CPU is simple: Wipe all you can off with a lint free cloth that is wet with acetone, always wiping toward the center of the core to avoid getting any on the rest of the processor (I know, this is impossible). After wiping off all you possibly can, use a pencil eraser to simply "erase" any compound that might have gotten on any of the components or bridges. Works like a charm. Just remember to re-do the "pencil trick" on the L1 bridges if you messed them up (not necessary to connect L1's on a 1.4 T'Bird, as it's unlocked from the factory)

My powersupply is a 300w Antec. I don't have a PS to try. Will the PS out of a Gateway Performance P3 750 work with the Asus MB?

I don't know about Gateway's, but some Dell's use a special PSU that only works with Dell MBs. The connector looks the same but it will not work.

Are you sure you have the "Power" and "Reset" switches connected properly? Do the switches actually work and not shorted?

The switches connected properly, and I checked them with a VOM & they do work. Time to RMA the board back to New Egg, it think.
