No Boot, No POST

I changed the CPU heatsink on my 1.3 T-bird & now my computer won't boot. There are no beeps or sounds of any kind from the speaker. The CD, floppy, CD-burner, & case lights flash. All the fans run. The monitor is black & the power light stays yellow/amber, never goes to green. I've looked at the CPU & MB, no burnt spots, gaps, etc. I cleaned the Artic Silver off the chip. Some had gotten on the componants of the chip. I've reseated & swapped out the video card. Reseated the ram. Tried the monitor with another computer &it works OK.
My fear is that I've damaged the chip or the MB, but I'm not sure how to tell which may be bad.
HEEEELLLLPPPPP!
Thanks,

The specs are:
Antec KS-282 case w/ 300w PS
AMD 1.3 T-bird, Asus A7v133 MB, WD 80 GB HD,Visiontek GeForce 3, Crucial 256mb PC133 RAM, Sony ES Monitor.

If the old chip will work but not the new one, you either have a bad new chip or an incorrect jumper setting. (With some jumperless boards you may have to put the old chip back in then reset the BIOS.)

your bios may have built in protection for bad cpu fans as with my KT7 and with the bios that came with it if your cpu fan was not on, your system wouldn't boot, nice feature but i was building with a chrome orb and the fan was too fast, the bios wouldnt let the system boot because it was out of specs for the bios and this issue was fixed with a bios update

I replaced the old HS & fan, no luck.
I swapped out a CPU from a friend & I got the BIOS screen to show up, but it was frozen/locked. I rebooted & it was back to the same black screen. Must be the MB????

Make sure you are not over clocking. Set it to jumper free if it has that setting. BTW are using a 200 or 266 chip?

I have shorted the 2 solder points to clear the BIOS. Board is set to jumper free & 266.

Have you resolved this yet? I am having the EXACT same problem.

Machine runs 24/7, on video power-save when I'm not there. It worked Sat. night, but Sun. night was dead. Power switch on case did not work; rebooting from power strip switch gave me the same symptoms: no POST, no life at all video-wise; all fans seem to work, spins drives, flashes keyboard lights, etc. etc. etc.

System:
Athlon 1.0 GHz
ABIT KT7 board
Antec KS282 case, 300W PS
Visiontek Xtasy GeForce 3 Ti200 card
256 MB PC133 RAM (first slot) 128 MB PC100 RAM (second slot)
2 IDE hard drives, HP cd16 CDRW, ZIP drive, etc.

The hardware in this system hasn't been touched in about 2 months (which was to add the CDRW). She just sits there, humming along, crunching for SETI in her spare time.

I am leaning toward the CPU/MOBO being the issue, but would like to be sure. Will try an older chip (have a Duron 650 laying around) and video card, but doubt it is video since the video card is idle most of the time (in contrast to the CPU, which runs 100%) and given the behavior of the machine (i.e. the lights flashing, lack of response from the power or reset switch on the case). It just sounds like central command took a vacation.

TIA for the help.

I tried another known good cpu & now that cpu will not work in the computer it was removed from. I can only guess that the MD is bad.

sounds like the motherboard is dead, the voltage regulator may have gone with it causing the cpu to die as well. Try your cpu in another known working machine, also when you removed the components, what did you do to combat static? you may have ESD'd both of the motherboards if you just touched them without grounding yourself..

The original chip was tried in a working computer without success (same symptoms). Now the "borrowed" known good chip does not work in the known good computer. Both chips are now dead. ESD precautions were followed, i.e proper grounding, wrist strap, touch the metal case first, etc. Must be a bad MB.

The story gets even better:

I came home tonight, and thought "What the hell, let's see what happens." I flip the switch, and she boots. HOWEVER, the CPU fan (which ran fine the previous time) is making hideous noises and warbling (not keeping a constant rate of speed). I backed up some important data, shut it down, and rebooted. It came back up, and the fan is now quiet.

The machine *appears* to be working normally. However, there is clearly a poltergeist running around somewhere. The only candidates are MOBO or PS.

PS: It could be this - maybe whatever was loose or screwy in the PS has fallen back into place, although this doesn't easily explain why the fan worked fine yesterday (when the machine would not POST), worked poorly the first boot today, and is now quiet.

MOBO: It could be this as well, and this is my primary candidate. The CPU fan does connect through the MOBO, and the rest of the preipherals aren't demonstrating any obvious power-related problems.

I'm going to leave it alone, as long as it stays up (data is backed up) or until I get back from a trip later this month. A new MOBO is probably still coming (am drooling at the thought of an Athlon XP anyway!). I'll keep y'all posted.

I replaced the MB with a refurbished board from NewEgg (A7133-C) & a new T-bird 1.4. It powered up & ran great for 5 minutes, then quit. Black screen, no fans, the two lights on the case alternately flash. If I shut it down & let it sit (cool off?) when I power it up the case power light flashes once, the fans make 3-4 revolutions, like they?re trying to start, then nothing. I?ve tried removing the MB screws & repositioning the MB, tried it with the MB not touching the case, removed all the drive connectors, checked for loose or shorted wires, etc. Anyone have any ideas??
