No beep on boot up!

Hey Ya'll,
I'm new to this whole PC builing stuff and to these forums, so please bear with me. ;) I've googled and researched and read numerous posts on various problems, so I have a pretty good idea on most things.

When I boot the computer up I don't hear any beeps........ but it goes into BIOS. Everything else works (I'm pretty sure). I know for a fact that the processor is running too hot - it shuts itself down after about 1 minute. I going to replace the HeatSink pad with some AS 5. I'm not sure if this is causing no beeps or if I have a speaker that is not plugged in right or what. Does the MoBo have an internal speaker? I couldn't find anything thru the manufacturer's website. It's an ECS 661FX-M7 and I'm using a P4 LGA775.

Any ideas??? I'd love to hear them!

Kindly feel me on the details. First of all Your case, It has a pc speaker right? And the motherboard itself should have a header for the PC switch and HDD light and all those goodies. most motherboards place the pc speaker header in with this group. Without looking at the particular motherboard specs you might want to look for a jumper that allows the beeps to be heard through a PC speaker or the external audio. Tell me about the CPU, How hot do you see it running? I know with the new LGA 775 socket it is kinda hard to get the CPU seated properly. Make sure that you have a good coat of thermal compound across the heat spreader of the CPU. I would not use the stock pads that come with the heatsinks.

Most mobos don't have a speaker built into them, I believe. The speaker should be in your case with wires from it, at least that's how it was for me. That wire should connect to your mobo, and you'll have to check your manual as to where it goes.

This is my tower; I only see specs for microphone
http://www.kingwin.com/pdut_detail.asp?CateID=46&ID=177

I've plugged in all the wires except for the firewire - my mobo doesn't have pins for that. The box came with a round speaker with two wires - a red and a black. Maybe I don't have that one plugged in right?? The box did not come with MSG LED+/ -, not sure if this is a problem either.

As far as the CPU, I didn't get a chance to check the actual temp before it shut down. I know it's been up to temp because it melted my pad and that's why I'm replacing it. I don't plan on OCing it either.

I've also read thru the mobo manual word for word - that's the only reason I knew where to put anything! :)

I had a chance to check out your mother board and case. You said the case came with a speaker and wires, but when I looked at the motherboard it does not have a header on Panel 11 for PC speaker only HDD light and ATX Switch.

The processor that you are using does it have pins and what core is it? ex. Prescott

Does it go all the way through boot up sequence to where you can get to the bios?

The speaker is small and round on the top with red and black wires going to a 4 hole plug - I put that on panel 21-SPDIFO1. As for the HDD light, that is on Panel 1(HD LED +/-). Is the ATX switch differ from the ATX 20 pin & 4 pin + 12V power connector?

The processor:
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - Supporting HT Technology 1
Processor Number? 570J°, 560J°, 550J°, 540J°, 530J°, 520J°
Package LGA 775
Architecture 90 nm process technology
L2 Cache 1MB
Clock Speed 2.80 to 3.80 GHz
Front Side Bus 800 MHz
Chipset - 800MHz systme bus Intel® 925X Express, 915P Express, 915G Express chipsets
Recommended Applications
Digital Music
Digital Video
Gaming
Digital Home apps
Business Productivity and Solutions

Features Intel® NetBurst microarchitecture

Not sure about the core

Yes I can get to the bios, I was kind of exploring it first before it shut down.

"I looked at the motherboard it does not have a header on Panel 11 for PC speaker only HDD light and ATX Switch".

That is what you said.
I read it wrong - so ignore what I asked about that.

What on earth did make you connect a loudspeaker to a DIGITAL line-out signal?

Please do yourself a favor and read up on the basics of system assembly. The mainboard's manual would be a good start. Better yet, have yourself tutored for this your first system by someone on location, right there when and where you are doing it. Just too many subtle things you can get wrong.

Is that what that is? A loudspeaker? Where am I supposed to connect it?!? The mobo manual doesn't say anything about it.

As far as reading up or being tutored on this - all I've been doing for the past few weeks is reading and researching. When I get to something that stumps me I get online and start reading whatever I can. I guess I'm gonna have to look up this speaker issue as well.

I managed to get the computer to boot up, which is more than some on their first PC. If you have any tips or good links to info, let me know.

Thanks

Yeah it might be a bad idea to plug your PC speaker into the SPDIF header. This header is your digital audio in/out header for external sound cards. Going back to the drawing board and after looking at your motherboard I am not sure that it supports the startup beeps. I read through the manual and most board manuals if supported wil give you a list of beep codes, your manual did not. If you have never ran the board before I would clear the CMOS using the jumper on the board. The manual will give you instructions on how to do this. This will set the bios back to Factory settings. Another thing make sure that you have good power to your CPU fan Had an exchange server once that would just keep rebooting because of a CPU fan failure. After that I consult your manufacturer to see if there was anyone else having the same issue.

Sweetness - thanks for taking the time and really looking into my problem;) !!! I've gone thru the mobo manual and placed everything else that it calls for. I'm gonna do some searching on this speaker thing too. I just have to wait for the paste to come in and do it up!!

:D
