no audio device message

Been having this strange issue with a customer PC. Audio was not working.
System is a Dell Dimension 3000, Windows XP. So I checked the normal stuff and all
seem normal but no sound. I downloaded the audio driver from Dell
support site, install went find. I than had sound. Life was good.
Rebooted PC three or four times and still had sound.

Customer calls back next day. Same problem again no sound and the
Sound and Audio Device Properites| Sound tab is all greyed out. With
no Audio Device label at top of window.

I am thinking that something is disabling the Windows Audio Service. I am
also thinking about copying over from another Windows XP the audiosrv.dll
file out of system32 over to hers.

Anyone have any thoughts on what is causing this and perhaps a
solution?

My first thought would be User error 😉

Did you turn off Windows System Restore before installing the Drivers?
I'd make sure this was off to clean out all older Restore points, install the Drivers, and then re-enable the System Restore.

My best guess is the User did a Restore System to a Backup without Drivers.

Good input wanderer27. Did not think about the system restore point.
I will disable srp first and than re install drivers again. Thanks
again for thinking about that one. I too am tempted to say
operator error.

Windows has so many nooks & crannys it's easy to miss one 🙂

You might want to double check for any Malware / Virus's too when you get it back.
