No AthlonMB that go to 1GB?

I was thinking of getting either a GA-7DXR or ECS K7S5A but according to crucial you can only get their 256MB sticks for those boards, so either 768MB or 512MB total. Is there another memory manufacturer that's good and cheap and makes 512MB sticks compatible with those MBs?

I've seen several companies that offer registered DDRam sticks up to 512mb. There are several current Athlon boards that have four DIMM slots, so with 4 512 sticks you could get just over 2 gigs of ram.

Mushkin offers two PC2100 DDR 512MB sticks. One is around $60 and is 2.5-3-3 and the other is like $130 and 2-3-3. Any opinions on Mushkin? I normally use Crucial, and I haven't dealt with the other companies. Any opinions on the differences between the two Mushkin 512MB sticks?

those 512MB sticks are registered DDR memory chips. i don't know if they will work in a motherboard that is not designed for registered. if you need a gig of RAM, get a tyan tigerMP. it has 4 memory slots and will accept registered memory, so it can have 4 GB of RAM! btw, i believe that is the max for a 32-bit operating system (2 ^ 32 = 2 x 2 x 2 ^30 = 4 x 10 ^ 9 = 4 GB).

You're American, so you can order from newegg. Go to their site and buy a Shuttle AK31 Rev. 3.1 and be merry with your 1 GB of Crucial DDR. Tell 'em I sent ya.

The problem is that I don't want to pay the premium for registered. Looking at Mushkin's site, they have a "basic" PC2100 DDR 512MB stick for about $65, but their registered is $236! So with the Shuttle AK31, I'm still stuck getting registered, and registered 256MB sticks still aren't cheap.

So I may be stuck going with 2x512MB unregistered mushkin as the cost effective way to get 1GB of RAM. The Tiger sounds appealing, but at $206 vs. $65...well, you do the math =)

Stop right there my friend! I live in Canada, where if we buy stuff from the U.S. we get screwed with exchange and tax, and I just bought myself some Crucial memory for my new system. I got two registered ECC PC2100 DIMMs and they cost me around $70 CDN each with tax.

You being American can obtain a 256 MB stick of the same stuff I've got for the $40 US I paid, and you also get free shipping.

Their registered sticks are they best they make, and you can switch off the ECC and push them to 170+ MHz with ease. Try explaining how that $236 Mushkin stuff could possibly top that. I can't figure it out, and really when I compare the two Mushkin's prices are either downright gouging or Crucial's are insanely low. Either way, getting Mushkin is silly. Silly! You don't wanna be silly - you want to put some of that cash toward neat stuff like case lighting and pr0n site subscriptions. You could also buy two Shuttle boards and send me one as a present, too, since I can't find one here. That'd be awfully nice of you.

Trust me, I WANT to go with Crucial, but they simple don't seem to make 512MB sticks =( Which leaves Mushkin or someone similar. However, if it looks like I can go with 3x256MB unregistered in a Shuttle AK31 (assuming that's in spec), then I think I would prefer to do that using Crucial.

Why do you need a gig of ram? What to you do with the PC? I hope you are running 2000 or XP. If not it is useless.

Professional audio -- Cubase VST w/ loads of plug-ins and an in-memory sampler. This is going to be using WinXP. Trust me, I can use that memory VERY quickly. =/
