I drive a compact 4 banger sedan. My car is quiet even at redline (6200 rpm). It would be nice to get a handful more hp and more noise. Can I just rip off the muffler?

Folger's coffee can will do the trick.

I'll decide for myself. I'd be paying for the ticket not you.

get rid of the muffler and you will at best a ticket for the noise. Even a 4-banger is damn loud. as for the horsepower, you probably won't notice much difference unless it puts out a good bit already. To do it the legal way you can get an aftemarket cat-back. it wouldn't be free but you will get a much nicer sound and maybe a little more power depending on current output

You can rip off your muffler, releasing backpressure and gain a few hp...but that's pretty much illegal. What model/make car do you have, and I can try and tell you the best bang for your buck as far as exhaust goes.

You're not going to get any noticeable performance increase (if any at all) by ripping the muffler off a pos 4 banger. If you did some other serious mods, like air intake, new headers, high flow cat, etc. You might get some, but not alot. It'll sound like sh!t too.

just go with a nice cat back system. I have a flowmaster setup that i paid about $650 for. No real physical difference on my explorer, but my list of mods consists of that and a k&n, so...

You'll utterly kill your low-end torque due to the complete lack of backpressure, but hey, it's your car.

Check with the motor heads out here ...but a certain amount of back pressure is required for adequate cylinder scavenging.

That is not backpressure, that is a correctly tuned exaust system. Notice I said System. Usually if you remove the muffler without doing any other mods you will actually loose power rather than gain it. Nay change must be tuned for to gain any horse power. A well known mag ( that I forget at the meont, it was a few years ago ) did a feature where they trried different exausts. When they removed the muffler and had an open exaust after the cats they lost 1 HP even after tuning for the change. I actually remember that number.

I think it was Hot Rod, but don't quote me.

The only thing I have heard of people removing and gaining power is the cat(s) some factory cats are very restrictive. ( AKA dodge )

Again it depends on the vehic and engine.

If you are trying to get some more speed, try removing the stuff you do not use in your car. On average ( depending on HP/WT ) removing 12-15 lbs in your car is like adding one HP.

sigh, yeah you're right, I should already know this. The factory knows what they are doing and on modern cars, all the various systems are usually tightly integrated together. Altering one component affects everything else.

If you want a four banger with some zip, drive a stick. I love my little Mazda MX-6. It's got plenty of power to move out in a hurry. An automatic transmission is a power sucker.

I also agree that removing your muffler is begging for a ticket, and not just one. Get one, and they'll probably insist on an inspection of the repaired car. Do it again, and they may get a little more aggressive in their enforcement. At least I hope they would.

Can you get DSL in the pokey?

Yes, take the muffler off so that you can decrease your torque to make it sound like it actually has torque. That way you can entertain other by allowing them to point and laugh at you.

dude! you can rip off the muffler, put on a coffee can, cut ur springs, lower the car, put on stickers and you'll get like an extra 70 hp!!! hahaha jp jp... seriously tho, you're not going to get much hp out of removing the muffler... if you go the legal way, you can do it like the others said... depending on the car, there are some exhaust setups that'll add anywhere from 10-25hp legally

Seriously, don't you guys have anything better to do in this post 9/11 world besides policing my muffler? I'm flattered that you guys feel the need to personally police what I do to my car, but damn, get a life.

well it's too bad your wasting that money on an explorer.

i would take your car to a local exhaust shop and have them put on a high flow muffler, like a magnaflow, and a nice tip, probably around 100-150 for the muffler, 20-75 for a tip, a few bucks for labor, you'll get the nice tone you want and might notice a slight difference as far as hp.
