The ONLY thing I would ever need in a partial Start Menu viewing with respect to the desktop view, is if I REALLY need to be at constant watch, not missing a millisecond of time viewing active windows.

Otherwise, a full Start Screen with tiles pretty much acts as the desktop grid of icons in itself (this is been done before with the right area of the task bar (if task bar is placed horizontally) for "Show Desktop", but more featured than just desktop icons, of zeroing a cursor drag, one size icon with text that may blend into the desktop wallpaper - rendering not as readable. It is one of my gripes with Aero Glass with the title bars in text being not as readable.

Live tiles giving updated information upon either invoking a Start Menu or Start Screen, would be temporarily shown, I wouldn't want a constant space taker present (much like the widget bar in the past with 7 and Vista) in the way, array of desktop monitors or a single screen on a Tablet PC or laptop otherwise.

I sure as well hope that this may EASE transition to the Start Screen as I have already realized.

I just want a more consistent interface. Having settings spread across two different UI designs is not ideal. For example, wifi connections are through Metro, but all other network settings are in classic. Metro has some visiualization and power settings, but you still have to go to Control Panel for others. Windows update is another area that could use some improvement.

I'm just glad Microsoft remembered they aren't Apple and shouldn't be selling one size fits all OSes.

I see this no different than Windows 8.1 with the upcoming Update 2 and its crappy weird start menu. It will never replace Windows 7, another fail for Microsoft before it's even released

I hope they bring back Jump List support on the Start menu.

I wonder if there's a limit on the size of the Start menu, or whether someone could load it up horizontally (ie. multiple columns of tiles) and vertically with tiles. I probably wouldn't use any tiles per se, just use the left column for pinned apps as I do with Win7.

Giving the stupid Microsoft account system a back seat (ie. very optional indeed) would be great as well.

The Start menu in the second screen shot is very odd.

while MS never confirmed it, most sources that have talked about it pretty much said that it not coming with update 2 and has been pushed back to Threshold/Win9

http://www.zdnet.com/no-microsoft-start-menu-for-windows-8-until-2015-sources-7000030100

Also the Mini-Start menu will be customizable so if you want to have metro apps on there you can or not.

As for that 2nd photo in the OP link's I believe that was only a concept and the actual thing will look more like the first image or what they showed off at build earlier this year

The only big question for win 9 is, will it go to a subscription based model ?

Only a fail by you, most of us will wait for final version before giving a honest realistic opinion.

I'm glad to see Microsoft trying some new ideas on Start menu and not going back to the boring default Win7 Start Menu etc which is older then a lot of members here (cough cough Win95 ) .

Obviously too early to give an opinion because its not final and also nothing beats first hand experience in usage.

I'll be jumping on Win9 regardless as a gamer I want DX12 :) .

I've a seen a few rumours floating around from free to discount like Win8 was on release,as to subscription based I doubt it very much, probably just pay for it just like previous Microsoft Operating Systems, but the big question is how much on release is Microsoft aiming for?

They may offer one like office, but it would be WAY too early to think they could move an OS straight to a subscription model. Of course, we are talking about the folks that gave us Windows 8.

Personally if they ever did go sub I'll probably go Linux for good and do all my gaming on a console, never thought I would say that.

The article was updated:

Caution, Debunked: The actual screen shot is fake, whether the information is too, remains to be seen. The article remains below in its unaltered state.

Yeah, was going to say that looks like Windows 8.2 to me (the one with the start menu). I'm guessing you can modify the start menu to remove live tiles and add in program shortcuts should you wish. Why people would do this is beyond me (use the taskbar...one less click) but to each their own.

Personally if they ever did go sub I'll probably go Linux for good and do all my gaming on a console, never thought I would say that.

Consoles have subscriptions too... Either Playstation Plus for "free games" periodically, or Xbox Live for multiplayer experiences and interactions. The only one without one, is Nintendo.

And they are more expensive than a Office 365 subscription... per user that is.

I wouldn't want an OS subscription anyways - for stationary desktop PCs, and would continue to support a fixed pricing, periodic release every few or several years for upgrades to keep some machines up and running. With laptops and Tablet PCs, it depends but they generally last through at least a majority of an OS's time line before I change hardware itself, or I may overlap in two OS versions before a change in laptop/tablet PC.

Also, either way, if it is a change to the subscription model, it would also partly be on Microsoft's end AS WELL AS the OEM's end for support. Right now, it is entirely under the OEM for end user device support, with Microsoft catering through OEMs for major workings. Reason why you don't here it from this very forum, is that when each of us bought OEM copies, we assume we are the support in entirely, and thus handle such accordingly. If there was a problem, those very people SHOULD collaborate on Technet and MSDN for feedback and collaborations to the fixes.

The above paragraph is a reason why I do not mind sending in error reports and logs to assist in the process.

Come think of it, I have NEVER upgraded a personal laptop's OS throughout my ownership of one. My Inspiron 6000 still has XP on it, the Envy 14 last I parted with it still had 7 as the time I bought it.

On the other hand, most of my desktop PCs through their hardware active lifetime always had at least one OS change on them. XP to 7 on one, 7 to 8/8.1 on two of them.

The only exception is back in the days of the Athlon and Athlon XP days where I changed from 98 to 2000 to XP.

That was directed at Mem, who likes working with 8.

It's not a case of liking Win8 but needing Windows for my PC gaming so in my case I've upgraded to virtually all Windows versions over the decades,if the sub does ever appear I think I will go towards non sub gaming system and stick with Linux.

However I can't see Microsoft doing that for their Operating Systems since it would be a very radical change.
