Production costs for nearly all platforms/genres have been going up. If they can't compensate with increased volume, I think it's only a matter of time before we see the prices raised everywhere.

Heh well the market will figure it out I am sure. If they lowered the price of the console they would have higher demand which would lower the cost per unit when it comes to dev costs.

With the costs of these consoles they priced me out of it I will tell you that.

They could compensate with in game advertisement. I think that $60 borders on "reasonable" for a new title.

As long as it is not invasive, I wouldn't mind seeing advertisements integrated into games. As with some current titles, they could have billboards or such. What I don't want to see is commercials playing during load screens, or going on a Pepsi Quest for the Elixir of Thirst Quenching - insertions that would ruin the immersion.

I've owned games that I've paid less than $60 for and would have happily paid $60 (or $85) for.

Then again, I've owned games that I've paid $30 for and felt totally cheated because the game completely sucked.

A game would have to be pretty damned good for me to pay more than about $50 for it, but it's not impossible. If I got a game as good as Starcraft was in the day, or NWN, or the original Zelda. Something with originality, some creativity, good replayability (ok, maybe not Zelda on the replay factor)... I'd be fine with higher prices. Sadly, the average game these days is a steaming pile of rehashed old games with updated graphics.

Engadget has it that PS3 prices will be the same as XBOX 360 game prices. 59.99 and all 7 games are on preorder.

One of these days, I'm going to form my own studio, design the games I've always wanted to see, and self publish them over the net, through Steam, or some such system.

Sony approach...
Hey, these cell processors sure are fast when you go through a bunch of contortions to write code exclusively for them that is completely non-portable to anything else. Let's use those!!! If anybody manages to get something to work it's gonna be really fast and look great!

Microsoft approach...
Build the platform not for the gamer, build it for the developer. Make it as easy as possible to creat powerful software and make it easily port to and from the PC.

Which one works?
Sony should have a good lineup of games by the time the Xbox 720 ships.

(I'm a blu-ray over HD-DVD fan though 🙂 )

Mind you...I get xbox games in the company store for $15 😛

I'd pay at least $60 for that game.

But anyway, I doubt they'd try to sell them for more than $60-$70. Sony wants to make money back on their console eventually, so they have to sell games at a reasonable price. That website is full of crap. There seem to be a lot of fanboi websites conspiring against the PS3, and it's absolute nonsense. Hold your tongues until the console is actually released.

Also, Smilin, the Microsoft approach is identical to the Sony approach. This is why you'll never see a game like Dead Rising for any other platform or the PC. Making games that are cross-compatible theoretically would hurt console sales. Exclusive titles drive sales, this has been true for ages. Halo (although I personally dislike the game) is a good example, it drove xbox sales and will drive 360 sales just like MGS4 will drive PS3 sales.

Find that 'development costs' propaganda a bit hard to swallow since PC games, which look better than console games (and often it's the very same games!) rarely cost more than $50. Still, we must consider the royalties 3rd party publishers must pay to the console manufacturer, which doesn't happen on PC. We'll see how much they end up costing soon.

From a marketing/sales perspective yeah they are about the same.

From an actual code perspective the PS3 is a nightmare to code for and the architecture is very alien. The Xbox shares much with the PC so porting is very easy....when sales/marketing strategy dictates that the money should be spent.

Ars Technica
"SonyStyle.com has begun taking preorders for PS3 software, and so far every game on the list is coming in at $59.99, matching Microsoft's game pricing scheme. "

Just wait though, tomorrow we'll find out that the PS3 causes cancer in laboratory mice.

Great games do not exist anymore. With Bioware bought out and companies like EA running the show, we are not going to see a game like Baldur's Gate or NWN: Hordes of the Underdark anytime soon.

The funny thing is that you all think Nintendo is cheap and all but i must say Nintendo is a really smart company... with the hardware they are using and selling point at launch they look to make profit on each console sold which is totally crazy as no one makes a profit on hard at launch ;*( . 2nd they could have sold the Wii at $199 and still made money but then they would run into price drop trouble. Australia is paying $399 for Wii which is $300USD with Wii sport... i couldn't care less about Wii sport as i would be bored in about 2 days with it. Wii + Zelda TWP + 4GB SD card for memory/iso save + extra Wii remote + 1x classic controller = $700AUD :! not so cheap in australia.

I can buy an XBOX 360 pro with 2 games + controller for $750AUD 🙁
