Ok. I have this library book out (long story) and now I need to put it back on the library shelf. The library has those security panels at the entrance/exit. So how do I get the book back through? Can I line a bag with something...? I don't know how those security panels work, so that would be a start...

umm hand it to the library staff saying you had it in your bag, the detector didn't go off and you forgot about it?
or tell them the truth
depends on the model of security checkpoint they used aswell, usually over the top won't set it off, or behind it. you didn't hear it from me, (I know this because I was a media aide)

Ummmm... Find out where the magnetic strip is and cut it out? If you have the book at home with you already, this should be an easy task.

Don't they have an outside book drop? Drop it in. Leave the book outside the doors at night, they will take it in themselves in the morning.

Find a teenager carrying alot of books in. Distract them by pointing to a flying saucer in the sky. While they are looking, knock their books to the ground. Slip your book in the pile. He will carry it in for you.

They might get a little suspicious if they see you chucking your bag over the detector though :)

Get yourself one of those lead aprons that the dental assistant puts on you during an xray, carry your book inside that so the lead will shield the magnetic strip. Easy as pie. :)

Put it in the book drop.

I know how to do it... and you should be able to figure it out... but there's no way I'm going to tell you... stealing from a library of all places is wrong in so many ways....

he's trying to give it back, not steal it.
PS: they will just be happy to get the book back, don't sweat it.

I knew ultimately someone would have to say it. :Q

Hey I didn't steal this book. I'm doing the right thing here by getting it back on the shelf where it belongs. There is no outside book drop, I'd have to hand it off to the librarian which isn't really an option. All I want is for the book to be shelved again, which involves getting it back IN not out of the library. If you know of an easy way but don't want it to be abused pm me instead of posting it here. Thanks.

d00d, just walk in the library and put it in the drop box or hand it to the librarian. You sound like you're going to be so mortified or blacklisted by the city. You're not asking the librarian to marry you, you're giving her a book. Get over it.

i'm posting this for purely education purposes.
i do not promote any illegal activities of any sort.
i'm not responsible for your stupidity.

most books that i've seen ... has a metalic strip (sometimes covered in plastic).
which i imagine carries some sort of electrical charge.
so... i'd assume that if you were to use one of those heavy duty magnet/tape erasers.. it'll work.

if you don't have one of these...
then you can possibly do this with an old harddrive... that you don't use any more.
open the harddrive casing ... and you should be able to find super strong magnets inside.

Since you feels terrify in giving the librarian the book, I have to wonder is it kind of books that you shouldn't have? tsk, tsk. Don't worry just give her the book, she won't bite. ;)

Enter the library walking backwards. When the alarm goes off, whirl around and exclaim "oops" or something like that, then go to counter and check it out with your card. Then you can return it, no problem.

How about saying that you found it at a coffee shop and it had their stamp in it so you were just returning it? Simple, no?
You could mail it back though if you are worried about what they will think.

I saw this on cops once. People line bags with aluminum foil and put stolen things in them. Then they can just walk out and the alarm won't go off.

I have NO idea if this is true. It didn't seem like COPS would tell people how to steal though. I've been tempted to try though.

Sounds to me like this dude owes some library fees on the book, and wants to use the "I returned it a long time ago" act. Then he can show them that it is on the shelf and make it look like their fault (a check-in error). Just my $0.02.

If the alarm didn't go off when you went out with the book, why would it go out when you are going in? Just walk in there and give them the book. Say ya found it or something.

Get one of those lead XRay shields they give you when you go to the doctor's office. Or, fill you book bag with sand, placing the book directly in the middle of it. Or maybe a good magnetic shielding to your book bag would suffice.

LOL...that's pretty funny. Yeah seriously, just take the freakin book back or drop it in the slot! No biggie.
