I know you said HD, but the projector you linked to wasn't HD, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I love my Infocus 4805.
You can get one for about $1000 and the bulb that is rated to last about 3000 hours.
With the money saved, you could get a replacement bulb.
I've used the 4805 with a 720p signal and it looked excellent. It also has a very good deinterlacer that would help SD stuff look pretty good.
If you're going to use this projector for watching HDTV and movies, I would suggest a 16:9 one instead of a 4:3.
EDIT: btw, you're getting/have a nice sound system to match, right? 😛
I think there is a hot deal going on with an Infocus 4805 refurb (but with warranty) for $700. Might be something else to look into.
Again I would but the rainbow effect, needing to be in a darker room and agin that it would be on at a min 12 hours perday (My youngest and I would be gaming, watching tv on it and then we would watch movies or tv at night, would cost me alot more in the long run then just getting the CRT 65".
Thanks to all that helped in making up my mind what is more cost efficiant for me if I went big screen goodness.
Just checking - have you looked at any DLPs to see if the rainbow effect bothered you? The 4805 has a faster color wheel in its list of improvements over the X1 (4800).
I can see RBE if I try to see it (moving my eyes around rapidly when there's bright text on a black background), but I can't see it 99% of the time.
Not having a dark room is a big drawback though, so I guess a front projector wouldn't be too great of a choice.
