Hey everyone. I need help with directions, an alternate route that I can't find help with on Mapquest/Google Maps etc. I'm coming back from the city at a job in Verona. Usually I take 280 to 95 (the Turnpike) to the GW Bridge. However, if I want to avoid 95, I know I can take the Parkway. I think it's the Parkway, to 4, to 17 and then to the Bridge. or maybe its the Parkway, to 17, to 4 then the Bridge. Which directions on 17 and 4 do I take to GO INTO New York City??

Thanks
-Phil

I believe the GSP has an exit directly onto Route 4 East which takes you right up to the GWB. If not, I know GSP to 17 N to 4 East will work.

hmm...i've lived in jersey for over 13 years and I've only ever taken the parkway or turnpike for 1) shore; 2) great adventure.

If you can get to 80 from 280...just take 80 east all the way to the GW bridge. Of course traffic can be a bitch but traffic on the parkway/turnpike is even worse, plus there's tolls. NO tolls on 80 until you actually get to the tolls for the bridge. yep yep. gl!

edit: and also iirc...you want to avoid local highways like 17 and 4 cause traffic + lights = even more awful, imo.

Ok thanks for the advice guys. I didn't think 17/4 had lights but I guess I'm wrong. The reason I want to look into that way is cause last time I was coming home from work (I just started a job in Jersey) 280 was jammmmmmed packed and the Turnpike was not much better as I got towards the bridge. It's usually a 45 min drive, took me an hour 45. Some of that will not be repeated this week, 280 had a part that was down to 1 lane for some weird construction that wasn't even construction and I'm sure that won't be there next time. I just want to know alternate routes in case 280 is jammed.

Yes, you can take the Garden State to 4 east, that will take you to the GW Bridge (I think it's exit 161 - somewhere around there). Taking the Garden State to 80 east, (exit 159, I think) is usually quicker than route 4. Unless the radio tells you that 80/95 is a mess.

Good luck.

I do this too often to bother looking at exit numbers. If you're gonna do this a lot, ask me for the back roads that bypass 80/95 and go directly to the bridge.
