*nix Download help

I want to install Mandrake 8.1 (I'm a newbie), and I downloaded the ISOs (which took 3 attempts and 4 days), but, when I burned them, they didn't work... I am connected to a DS/3, so speed on my end is not a problem...

If anyone has the ISOs for Mandrake 8.1 and can send them over . . . AIM or whatever's easiest for you, that would be great!

Thanks,
Ryan

try linuxiso.org or planetmirror, and make sure and verify the md5 sums. if that doesnt work then the prob must me on your end (your machine, or being burned wrong/bad)

I checked the sums pre-burn and they looked right

perhaps, I am having ISO extraction problems . . . I am running XP Pro and using the built-in burn software (using winImage to extract).

Thanks for ideas...
Ryan

I have EZ CD Creator if I can use that in XP, but I heard that in Beta 2 it caused a system crash . . .

Don't extract the image, otherwise you lose the special bits that make it bootable.

bah, n0c beat me to it!

If you burn the ISO directly on the CD, don't you just get a .ISO file on the CD, and not all the inside files? I am under the impression that an ISO is like a ZIP (just a little diff)

It worked for my 3 Debian cds. The iso image is an image of the cd. Its not like a zip file to my understanding but more like a tar file.

There should be an option in your CD burning software to burn an image. Use that. When you are done there will be a bootable CDROM with all the files for Mandrake from just one .iso file.

yeah in the XP built in Burn soft there is no option there, I am now installing EZCD Creator 5 Plat.... So, as long as it works, I will have Mandrake on my sys by tomorrow...

Thanks guys,
Ryan

PS: I am running a Plextor 12x10x32 internal SCSI drive (never had a problem).

Use get right from download.com I remember reading somewhere about the download type being binary or hex? The download site recomended using get right to not have the problem. Anyways i have a cable modem and didn't want to leave it on all night to download some files. I used get right and when ever i had my computer on it would continue downloading the files. You also have to bun the files in a certian way. Im sure if you did a search here about burning iso's you would get some more info. With cd creater you just double click the file and bamm your set, but i think with nero you got to set it up right. But to let you know i downloaded all three cd's and the check file and burned them all with cd creator and they are working fine. (well that part is working fine, running linux is giving me some problems). I hope this helps.

Get the latest Nero from the Ahead site... install it
and use the File->Burn Image to burn the iso into cds!!

And while you're doing that, buy the Nero online it's cheap and gets the job done perfectly!!
