About to get the Nividia 680M for my gaming laptop. Any feedback from anyone that has it? How well is it running your games at max? Also how does it fair twords future games say the next 3-4 years.

It's a very powerful laptop, congratulations.

NOTHING will be top dawg beyond 2 years, it has never happened.


Do you play any cpu bound games like starcraft 2, or battlefield 3 ?

Both these games require MAJOR CPU power for competitive multi-player. :|

If so, you may want to consider getting a super desktop ontop of a mediocre laptop,

Instead, of the all in one super laptop,

Because mobile processors are an Achilles heel in the foot of gaming.


Short version, they suck.
 
it's essentially a desktop 670 core that's underclocked. If your laptop is anything like my alienware, there is probably a bit of overclocking headroom as well. I would think it should keep you happy for a while.

hey afaik its a great mobile GPU. I assume you have a 17 or 15 in screen on @1080p on your laptop, so resolution isnt going to be too crazy like 2560x1600 or multi monitor, so you should be fine for a while 😀 My sager has a GTX 560M, still works great for the most part.

ahhh.... no they don't.

The i7 Sandy's and Ivy Mobile processors are almost as fast as there stock desktop counterparts.

You need to do some research before posting stuff like this.

For example, the VERY common i7 2670qm SB chip found in base gaming laptops is close to a stock 2500k in CPU performance. I hardly call that an "achilles heel"

Im just gonna say, if youd like to save a lot of coin and still have a great laptop you could go with 8GB RAM and the 7970M.

Also, you can get a nice ~250GB SSD for about $200 retail at places like Newegg.com
Keeping the stock 500GB (or $20 upgrade to the 750GB) and doing your own SSD would save you $200.

Im not 100% sure, but the 1080P matte screens used to get good ratings, you may be able to save money with that option and still get a decent quality screen.

All total you could save $700 on the laptop and still have 90+% of the performance.
 
Yeppers, the 7970M is maybe 5% slower, while the matte screen may only be 70% NTSC. Unless you KNOW your going to need the RAM (photo/video editing ect) the extra RAM wont do anything (and you can add more later if you really need to).

Check the hot deals section for SSDs if your comfortable doing your own (should be easy). Crucial M4, Samsung 830, or Intel are all good and can be had for ~.75$ GB.
 
With optimus technology whats the use of the power plans anymore? Do i not bother them with anymore? No need to set to high performance? If i do set it to high performance or what have you, does this override the optimus controller? Or is there a optimus power plan?
